Many of us buy the Prado with the intention of doing some off-road stuff, perhaps beach, perhaps climbing in the high country and maybe some towing. Often people on this site question the Prado's ability (being only the little brother to the mighty Land cruiser) surely you need the Land cruiser to complete these often difficult tasks?
The answer as many are finding is that the mighty Prado can cope just fine.
I myself am a rare breed having the Petrol version of Altitude model. This was chosen purely because of the drivability around town and car like feel of the V6(happy wife happy life). I suffer from a little bit more fuel usage (overall presently 19.5 litres per 100 km 95% towing) in my travels however never have I felt the Petrol a lesser vehicle either in towing, on road or off road.
What I have done so far is Wonangatta, Blue rag and the High country all before it got the suspension done (recommend you do the suspension before you head to Wonangatta as the underbody did cop a bit of a beating) however the car did this without issue even tackling some double black sections (silly brother picked a bloody difficult journey).
I am presently in the middle of a half a lap around Australia and done lots of beach driving at Fraser Island and Port Stephens and numerous river crossings in Litchfield. I am still yet to get stuck (waste of money those Treds as they are still in the wrapper).
As for towing the Prado copes just fine. Fully loaded we are right on the towing limit of 2.5 Tonne. Once we established the correct heights on the van the car tows beautifully and I have now covered just on 10000 km without issue.
My journey can be followed on http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blo...re/1/tpod.html.
I am so far very happy with my choice although I would really like the towing capacity raised to get a slightly bigger van and perhaps the GPS system needs to integrate better off roads maps.
Interested in your thoughts but so far I am one happy traveler.
