Extra room in the rear of a 150

Hi

I am thinking of buying a GXL.

If you remove the third row of seats without putting in a set of drawers do you get more room in the rear or is it too uneven to be usable?

How hard is it to remove and replace the seats?

Alan it takes about an hour to remove the seats. In my build I posted the link which details the removal, it isn't hard and you only need common tools. You gain about 125mm of vertical space. If you make up a board as I did you have a flat surface otherwise the floor is unsealed and uneven. If you can find ABR Sidewinders build Derek shows pics of the naked floor. The only tricky bit and it that isn't too bad is tidying up the sides at the back. Have a look at what I did. It looks neat and tidy. You could try and get the GX plastics but I would expect that to be a much more expensive exercise.

Just what I thought

A sheet of 12 mm ply and a jigsaw should do the trick.

As I say in my signature, we will fly in, buy a car, do the trip, sell and leave.

I would leave the third row in Sydney and put them back to sell.

Why not buy a 120? No need for mods to the boot floor then.

I was talking to a mate who said if I buy a 150 he might buy it off me. (Big MIGHT)

He could use the third row.

I would be happy with a 120, but it depends what is available next March.

Just wondering for my own interest if removing the 150 3rd row is a non-destructive operation? ie: Can you put the seats back in at a later date? (I'm presuming the answer is yes, just wanting to make sure).

Yes. As long as you don't cut the plastic trim near the door at each corner.

Derek the seats can easily go back in. I use the existing rear captive nuts to hold the board down and some new ones up the front that don't stop the seats being installed. Install takes an hour. I leave the 3rd row seatbelts in the car because it is used as an 8 seater as well as having the rear floor set up.

In relation to the rear setup, the guys over at Drifta do a pretty neat little draw/table/fridge solution I'm looking at here: http://www.drifta.com.au/prado-storage-drawers-package/. Not sure yet whether I'll be going DIY or something like the Drifta setup, but it's good to know I can put the floor back in as long as I don't cut the trim.

I might ask Drifta to do a fridge new floor setup. Not sure how they'd ship the floor though - its something that would be best done onsite.

I visited them at Easter and a chap there has a 150 GX - and he bought it with rear seats!!! Of course, its rear now has Drifta drawers in it. He wouldn't explain why he bought the GX with rear seats!! Must have been a Toyota special to him I thought later on ...

But they also confirmed the rear seats come out very easily.
