  • Fuel tank capacity

    Hey guys,

I recently picked up my new 2014 GXL which I must say I'm very happy with it but last night was the first time I needed to fill it. I could only manage to get 130 litres of diesel into the tank(s). I was sure it had 150 litre capacity so I checked the manual - 150l with sub tank and 87l without. There was some fuel left in the tank but I wouldn't think 20 litres - the warning light came on and range was at about 60km.
Anyways I will be taking the vehicle back to the dealer for it's first service/look over in a few weeks and can ask then but I thought I would just ask you guys if you had any ideas first.

    Thanks!

Common problem with diesel frothing while filling. Some members here have gone back the servo the next day and got another 10-15L in after driving only a few kms.

I have easily put 140l into mine while running the distance to empty down to zero.

You'll never much more because you have small amount in the pot from each tank to be accounted for.

Most I've ever managed is 135, but a few days later was able to put in another 15l. You'll still get over 1000ks from a tank.

Went through the same concerns with mine when I upgraded to diesel. Its normal, the frothing plays a part. Wait until the pump stops, wait a minute to allow the froth to settle, if you look inside you will see the froth and the bleed hole, diesel will flow out of it a few times, when the froth settles, you will prob fit another 6-8 litres, but I think you will find 130lts is about as much as you will squeeze in with the fuel light on.

When the fuel light comes on, you have around 20lt of fuel left and then the already mentioned diesel frothing when filling. Some brands of diesel don't froth as much as others.

I reckon you'll get min 1300km from any tank and on the highway as much as 1700km quite easily.

When mine was brand new I did two return trips from Bris to Bund (380km one way) in the same week and had 130km left before the DTE read zero. Put in 139L and averaged about 8l/100km.

Also remember in that 20L left in your tank is used to cool the injectors as well. Hence why the fuel light comes on at 130l. (Info obtained from toyota, not sure if it was to dodge fixing the fuel gauge)

I find that BP ultimate diesel is the only brand that doesn't froth up like the other brands and therefore I'm not wasting 15mins trying to fill up my to 100% capacity....

Funny you say that rob, I have only ever used BP diesel, and wondered why everyone was having problems that I havent. Filled up this arvo after doing about 30Km with fuel light on, 134L straight up, no worries. Oh, and the local BP always has a buy something get 8c a litre off, so they paid me $2 something to take two bottles of Gatorade, gotta be happy with that.

I would think trying to go for maximum fill to the filler is not a great idea. If the fuel heats up after you fill the is no room for expansion and you will just lose fuel through the expansion port. For that reason I only ever fill to first click at the bowser.

I always fill it right up until the breather flows fuel back out and it's almost to the brim. Having lived in, and travelled through, some of the hottest places in Australia I can say that the fuel has never heated and expanded to the point that it's flowed out of the filler. Even when filled to this point, as soon as you start up and drive off the level will drop sufficient enough to prevent this happening. It used to happen with the cars back in the 70's and eighties - petrol ones mostly.

On a recent trip to QLD towing a van from Sydney I stopped at a Shell servo just north of Brisbane I could only get 100 litres in the car, waited forever for the thing to stop bubbling out the filler and gave up after about 5 minutes. I had estimated it should have taken 130litres.

I figured there was something wrong when fuel useage worked out at 10l/100k's towing the van.

Next tank everything back to normal, can't remember what brand that one was.

As mentioned above you will have 15- 20L left in the tank when the DTE reaches 0
caltex Vortex Diesel is another brand that does not froth as much as others, make filling a lot quicker.

I've always filled my mine to 100% capacity and never had a problem and the car has over 100,000kms on the clock. Actually, I've done it on all my cars over the 30yrs I've been driving w/o any problems and on all different makes of cars and both Petrol and Diesels..... each to their own I guess....

One of the main reasons I do this is I can at least say with 99% confidence that all my fuel economy records are virtually 99% correct & I know in my own mind what I can expect to get when travelling in the outback.....
I'm always a bit curious when a lot of people quote these "low" fuel economy figures, I often wonder what their actual figure is.....but that's another debate....
