  • Fuel tank question.

New 150 owner here and I'd like to know a little about how the fuel gauge works in relation to the main tank and sub tank. Does it just go down steadily from full to empty? Is there a indicator to show when the main tank is empty? Any insight welcome thanks.

gauge works exactly as any other car- full is 150L empty is 0L. There is no sub tank button/indicator etc. The two tanks act as 'one'

Does anyone know how much fuel it leaves in the tank at a point it transfers over or a way to measure the amounts?

        OBD2 maybe?

Out if all the model prados i still liked the 95 series best for tank usage set up. Could pick what tank you wanted to come out of and also individual gauges... I liked it for the fact if eg I wanted to do a day on the beach I would run the main down to 1/4 then fill the reserve up and run off that. That way I didn't have 90kg of fuel hanging over the arse end. I also did this for 4wd day trips to give me a tad more clearance with out the weight over the back end... Cheers Steve

There is a siphon pump on the return line from the engine bay back to the main tank. This pumps continuously from the sub tank (back tank) to the main. So the back tank will be empty before the main tank comes off full.

Yes the 90 series and the 80 & 100 series Cruisers have some user flexibility but the 150 has given no trouble in 90,000km and in twenty years never needed the flexibility of manual tank selection.

I have a 150 and only worked out that the rear tank empties first this weekend, when I filled her up with only half a tank gone. You can hear the difference at the pump as the front tank fills first and the spill goes to the back. I confirmed this by tapping the rear tank and she was hollow sounding.
My Father has a 90 series and he raves about being ably to switch tanks. Which he forgets to do and then has stale fuel to deal with that turns the caravan black. Not sure why he wants be able to select tanks, the only thing he ever uses this feature is to run the back one empty first so less weight over the rear axle?

Thank your self your not driving a patrol, the sub tank has to be pumped into the main while the engine is on, and it takes about 20mins to move the 35L across. Adds a third to the main. But you can get caught on short trips with an empty main, not having enough time to pump it across.

How does replacing the rear sub-tank with an upgraded long range tank affect fuel gauge/flow etc? Is it a worthy upgrade?

Have to admit, the ability to switch tanks saved me a few weeks ago in my 90 series when I put a hole in my main fuel tank (rubbing on the bash plate created a leak). If I couldn't choose to run off my sub tank, I wouldn't have been able to spend 2-3 weeks sourcing a cheap replacement!

Roger, good point SandStorm. I have a heavy duty duty bash plate over my plastic main tank. It has some good clearance too. Factory unit bent up easy and I could not see what it was touching so I ditched it in favour of the heavier unit. Also rocks could be in between tank and guard so better to have a flat bottom guard so I can see what is going on.
If I had some time I would do a supported unit across the chassis rails from one side to the other. A bit like a belly plate on a comp truck. Cheers, mmm beer
