  • How do you replace the Alternator? is it a job for mechanic only

I've searched and searched and asked on some other posts with no replies. I played in some mud puddles the other week and my alternator isn't charging. I've washed out with high pressure and hose. I've been charging my batteries every night to get to work.
I haven't had time to take to mechanic, but can also source an original alternator through a friend for around $400. Just wondering if anyone has experience taking out the alternator?? It looks like a tough spot under the AC compressor.

Not sure about the 150 series but i did an alternator at work on a 120 series d4d the other day and it was fairly straight forward. Being a mechanic i could do it at home no worries but not sure of your mechanical skill.

I know nothing about car mechanics except on an old chev, but isn't an alternator basically a few cables in, and a few out?

Is 5 years a reasonable life expectancy for an alternator? Battery charging warning light came on on the way to work yesterday. Yesterday Battery test showed 12.3v, this morning 11.2v (confirmed by my mech). Genuine Toyota alternator quoted $800.50 supply only. Bursons, $782 supply only. My regular Repco mechanic $850.20 supply and fit. I am happy to give fitting a go as I have time on my hands at mo, any suggestions re cheaper supply options?

I have an alternator still sitting in the box after the Tassie GTG. Voltage fluctuating all over the shop. I watched the mobile auto sparky replace one on another 120 D4D. Looked pretty straight forward. (1) Disconnect both batteries. (2) Release accessory drive belt by using long spanner on idler pulley. (3) There's 2 bolts on the alternator that need to be loosened. Access gained via the inner right side rubber splash guard. Power connector needs to be un-clipped from the alternator. Looks reasonably easy - or the sparky said he could do it for $100.

Just pulled my old alternator to install the new one only to find the lower bracket has broken in half and the upper bolt has bent and chewed out the end thread on the main compressor bracket.

That's rough. Luckily the bottom arm is removable (therefore replaceable). Maybe the top bracket could be secured using a slightly smaller diameter bolt and putting a nut on the other end. The tension of the belt will help hold it in place.

Got new bolt, going to tap the thread again and see how that goes. It it looks like it will fail then a longer bolt will be needed with a nut on the end. Also welded the broken bracket and will run that until the new one arrives.

Hi all, I have just replace my alternator also, fluctuation voltage on the scangauge after getting stuck in the mud. So I replace the alternator. I had an old flexi head socket and open end spanner (one at each end) I cut of the C, spanner part off so I could slide a pipe over it and then tie that off at the main battery clamp. Removed the right hand front wheel and accessed from there. All pretty much straight forward after this. But.........Don't tell the missus after the replacement the voltage was still all over the shop!. More looking and yes the negative battery lug bolt was loose!!... tightened this and it's all GOOD. Well now I have a spare alternator. Doh!
                        Cheers
