  • Black hose turned Grey - Likely cause?

    Hi All,
It's been a while since I posted. I have now moved from the 120 community to the 150's so glad to join the crew.

I have just picked up our new (secondhand) 2012 150 V6 Altitude. When I bought it I noticed that the large rubber hose on the Air Inlet was grey instead of black looking like it had discoloured and was possibly going hard. However no other rubber hoses seemed to have greyed. It is very noticeable as it is quite large and on the top of the motor surrounded by lots of black plastic.

I was planning on possibly blackening it this weekend but on closer inspection I happened to realise that the grey actually comes off, revealing a perfectly black hose underneath which is in very supple perfect condition underneath.

Pics attached. Any thoughts on why this has occurred and why it would be specific to ONLY this hose?

    Does anyone else have this?

    Ross

      Thanks Andrew,
The google search is much easier when you know what it is called ;-)
Makes sense now why all hoses are not the same.... I thought it might have been due to a chemical being used in the engine bay.
      Problem solved....now to get cleaning.

I googled rubber residue, then found what the technical term was, and googled rubber blooming to find out more.

My new radiator hoses started blooming as well and I got a bit concerned. Now I know it's OK too.
