  • 'A Pillar' trim removal

    Hey guys,

Just wanting to remove the A Pillar trim on the drivers side to hopefully dynamat inside there a little to stop the very slight vibration/rattle from the Safari Snorkel bracket. It's very minimal and I could probably live with it, but thought may as well have a stab at trying to get rid of it. Might even be the case that nothing can be done, but would love a look around inside there just to be sure.
My main question is about the curtain airbag. Is the thing going to pop open and smash me in the face as soon as I remove the screws from the grab handle and remove the trim? Don't really feel like disconnecting the battery so would love to dodge that.
Obviously I will be very careful when doing anything in there....

    Cheers.

I ran some cabling down my A pillar in my 120 without disconnecting the battery, before I realised that it was probably a bad and stupid thing to do...

Why don't you want to disconnect the battery? Few minutes effort vs a broken nose?

Another thing to remember is you may disconnect the battery but there is still a charge in the firing mechanism for the air bag, don't know how long for. Mind you tho I'm talking from 16 or 17yrs ago, so things may have changed, doubt it tho.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but your airbag needs an electric signal (from the sensors on the car) to be sent to the pyrotechnic charge. I'm not sure that poking around a pillar is going to really have an effect on the airbag system...Unless you provide power to the leads of the charge.

When working with explosives, its always better to be safe than sorry, so disconnecting the battery would be a smart idea.

This one has always puzzled me as well - how could poking around near an airbag trigger it unless you somehow power the igniter.

All good fellas, finally figured out the problem wasn't with the bracket but actually the lid on the oil catch can that was vibing at 1000rpm.
Bloody definitely sounded like coming from near the snorkel! But yes common sense would have prevailed and the battery would have been disconnected just to be sure...
