  • Any Perth diesel owners with snorkel?

    Hi everyone!
First of all, this place has been a great resource while researching for my new purchase, a 2010 GXL with 145k on the clock. Not bad price too (shame it's black, guess I'll become expert with two sponges!)
Anyway, the usual list of mods is present and over here in WA (has to be the Toyota state. When we moved over its all we saw on the roads, prados, land cruisers, hilux...seen hardly any nissans) just about every Prado I've seen which is a lot has a snorkel.
Some members have discussed increased turbo noise / wind drag at speed etc.
And being that there is only so much you can gather from a computer screen / phone....

Is anyone willing for a passenger for 5 minutes to see what difference there is?

My partner and I do think a snorkel is a good idea for lots of reasons however, if the extra turbo noise / wind noise is going to drive me nuts... I'd like to know how much an effect it has before spending the dollars and cutting holes in it.

So, are there any friendly turbo diesel snorkel sporting owners happy to meet another Prado point member and shed light on this burning question?

And my first mod apart from those little wide angle mirrors (so good on the roads! No blind spots!!!) will be and EGR blank and clean that valve and manifold!!! I don't want that artery hardening crap to destroy my new (to me) 4WD!

    Cheers to you all.

And really appreciate all the info everyone shares. I never felt so "armed" when it came to talking Turkey on the price.

Will you use a snorkel? I'm in Perth and do bush/beach driving. Only come across 1 'river' over a track at the Harvey dam, we just went around instead of through it. Mates I 4x4 with also don't have snorkels, so i doubt im going to cross a river and leave them behind. I don't really have a need for a snorkel so i haven't got one.

I know people say they are good when your in a convoy if you can swivel the head so you don't get all the dust, I just hang back and try to limit the amount of dust im collecting.

I think your going to have to answer the question or yourself, do you need one?

In terms of need, I don't have a crystal ball for water crossings that may or may not come up in future.
There will be trips that involve dust. Especially getting posted around the country while I'm still in the military.
Slight fuel economy increase? Others report about .5 l/100 km, over the next few years that will slowly pay for the install I guess
But as mentioned, if it's noisy / whistling pain in the a$$ right next to my ears... It will be very distracting very quickly.
Like I said, trying to see if anyone can help by way of experience in the seat for a few minutes.
Nothing can beat that versus paying for it and hating it!

You'll probably hear a bit of induction noise. I quite like it. I've got a 120 and don't hear anything with the windows up. Dunno about the TJM

I'm in Perth, and have a 150 with a snorkel. However, it is a petrol model so not quite what you're after. I can say though that I've never noticed any noise from it, either with window down or up.

Do either of you chaps have to move more in the seat (forward / rearward) when checking around the pillar at roundabouts? Or is it "thinner" and can't see it? Make any sense?

Again I've got the 120 but the snorkel hardly makes a difference from where my seat position is. Slight glimpse of the read edge of the snorkel from the rear side of the pillar. Nothing out front. I'm 185cm and have the seat near rearmost setting.

I have a 150 diesel with snorkel and 3" exhaust. With the window down you can really hear the turbo spool up and induction noise, but once window is up you don't notice it.

I'm in perth if you want to look at a safari snorkel on a 150 diesel. I originally put it on to get rid of that annoying drone at 1500rpm (which it did) but of course the roof rack and awning make more noise than the lack of snorkel ever did.

I'm in Perth SOR if you want to have a look/listen to a diesel with a TJM airtech snorkel. I can't see it when driving as it sits fairly snug against the A pillar. My only issues have been to do with installation (insect grill was loose and vibrating, pillar mounting bracket screws were incorrect class and corroded) and a little bit of wind noise under strong cross wind conditions.

I'm assuming you have the auto tranny?

Did you notice any torque drop when going to the 3"?

                            Thanks for the info
Good to know seeing as there's a bit of a height difference between myself and my partner.
I've had to use some steps all this weekend to swap the roof rack back to factory roof rails (wouldn't fit in the garage otherwise)
Good thing they let short buggers still drive these things
