Kingchrome do a box full of numerous filter adaptors for future reference. It's a handy kit. Looks like it's time to get at it with a hammer and screwdriver to the base - carefully tapping it in an anti-clockwise direction.

Toyota tool part number 09228-07501 always had trouble getting anything else to work either broke them or not enough room.

I use my trusty snap on oil filter tool same one I've been using for over 20 years. Never a problem.

These people should not need a tool to do it up. Fools.
Don't bang a screwdriver though it, bad idea.
You might need the proper Toyota tool, or a snap on one.

              Cheers Joel
There are very few options available for this job, when i did my first service i did exactly the same as you, those oil filters are paper thin so you can not use a strap. The above wrench will remove it as it spins from the centre. Only other way i see is punch 2 screwdrivers through the top and use a 3rd to spin the filter off. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks for everyone one's advice. I have manage to book it into Toyota today to get them to change it, they will charge me 1/2 hr labour which I think is reasonable. I did have to suppress a laugh on the phone when the service guy told me they only tighten the filters by hand.

Before I do another oil change I'll go and buy the proper tool.

Just note that if you buy the Toyota tool it only fits the Toyota brand oil filters. I purchase the ryco filters from super cheap and the Toyota tool doesn't fit, although not a concern as I hand tighten only.

Yes good point. I might have to buy another generic one from Supercheap which will be fine as I will only hand tighten them myself.

Yeah mate, just buy the claw style ones like pictured above if you plan on using aftermarket filters. I always use genuine filters and also have a set of the genuine Toyota filter wrenches. They make them to fit all their filters.

This is the trusty old snap on, well blue point actually :-)

Even fits on a 1kz big oil filter.

Top tool get pretty much any filter off. It was $50 20 years ago :-)

I had the same problem,,crushed the filter with the arken useless strap
Jumped in other car to Toyota and picked up a Toyota filter wrench... problem is I had disfigured the oil filter so the wrench wouldn't grip it......
Red neck thinking saved the day.. I put the wrench on the filter and put 4 teck screws through it...worked a charm.
