After pricing a spare key & fob I had a chat with my local locksmith and came up with a more economical solution. The locksmith matched a blank (pretty sure it was for a Camry) to my blade and copied it for $30. So now I have a spare key secured/hidden outside of the vehicle. Even though I may not be able to start it, at least I can get in if I have to.

Good idea. I used to do this with my old car l when we went surfing/to the beach. It was just a generic blank that didn't have the chip in the fob to start it. We hid the real key inside the car and took the other one out with us so if we lost it, at least we hadn't lost the starting key. (and if someone found it they couldn't walk around the car park pressing the fob until they found the car)[SIZE=2]120 GXL D4D Auto, with a 'List of Wants' greater than the 'List of Needs' greater than the 'List of Haves'

If your that worried, you could hide the blade itself on the vehicle, pretty sure the clicker doesn't need it to operate?
You can still start the car with the blade due to the magnetic? thingo at the end. (from what ive been told, haven't tried it myself)
You just hold it right on the start button as you push it.

I have always secured a key outside of the vehicle for about twenty years now, it was a tip given to me by a tag along tour operator who requested all of his clients did it to prevent lockouts in remote locations. You could use the oem blade but then you don't have the blade on your key ring any more. My understanding of placing the fob adjacent to the start/stop button is this is for when the fob battery is flat. Placing the fob adjacent to the start/stop button may be like using it as a swipe card, I wouldn't think holding the blade only there would have any affect. Anyway, I did it to have a backup without spending $100 on a factory blade, and $500 on a factory fob.

Though it would have to be a very brazen thief going round smashing windows on the off chance that one had a key hidden it.
Another suggestion I've seen used if travelling in a group, is to give your spare starting key to someone else in the group. The chances of both of you losing the key are reduced[SIZE=2]120 GXL D4D Auto, with a 'List of Wants' greater than the 'List of Needs' greater than the 'List of Haves'

We just returned from an outback trip, and we always take a spare key with us.
We wrap the spare key fob in alfoil, and then seal the key/alfoil into a cryovac pack so it remains water tight.
The alfoil seems to effectively block the electrical signals from the fob, so you can keep the spare key anywhere you like.
I won't say where we keep our spare key fob when travelling, but if we lost our start key fob, or if it went flat or failed we can access the spare key, unwrap it and get going again.
Fortunately we didn't need to use the spare, but it is good insurance.
