  • Auxiliary Tank

    Need your help. Here in Europe we only have the 87 litre main tank fitted. I ordered the 63 litre aux tank in Australia and it we fitted it. we could not find out what triggers the diesel to flow from the aux tank to the main tank and at which point. i have the model with KDSS and Optitron instruments, only 1 fuel Indicators. Do Australian Models have 2 fuel indicators, one for each tank? as i am planning trips to remote places i need certainty how the system operate. Appreciate your help.8-)

    We only have the one fuel level indicator. It operates as one tank as far as I know.

      G'day,
      Short answer: It will be extremely difficult and technical to put in the rear aux tank and still keep one single gauge.
      Solutions in short: 1. Set up the rear tank as a sub tank with a separate pump and gauge.
      2. Replace the 87L with a larger tank (they exist and you'll get about 140L), therefore you keep the one gauge and pump.
      ++++
      The Prado dual fuel system is fairly complicated but also simple. To quote an explanation I read "Fuel is pumped from the main tank to the injector pump, excess fuel flows back from the injector pump
      to the main tank the via aux tank. Note the fuel does not actually empty into the aux tank
      simply goes in and out through a coil, I assume this is to heat or cool the fuel that's in
      the aux tank for some reason, most likely heat as if the aux is empty then it wouldn't
      cool the fuel going through. The fuel returning from the injector pump via the aux passes through a venturi in the main
      fuel tank. The venturi is used to suck fuel from the aux into the main. So basic answer is fuel returning
      from the injector pump drives a venturi effect which is used to suck fuel from the aux, there is no
      actual pump between the two tanks"

      I've spent a lot of time on my fuel system and in all honesty you're best off just replacing the main tank with a long range tank.

        Thanks JimmyC,

        I understand correctly that the excess fuel goes through the Sub tank and flows back into the main tank. Do the main and subtank empty simultaneously? Only one fuel gauge in the Cockpit?
