It says absolutely nothing about roof top lights. The whole "Fitted symmetrically about the longitudinal centreline of the vehicle" simply means they must be symmetrical. Also this is extremely old news.

      Hi there,

I doubt that the Longitudinal Centre Of The Vehicle is "Roof High".

      Longitude is Top to Bottom.

      Latitude is Side to Side.

In whose terms is 25 August 2015 "Extremely Old News"?

Curious as to where this leaves rear facing work lights, are they illegal even if switched off while driving?

          Hi there,

To my knowledge, all rearward facing "White Lights" must be connected to the "Reversing Light Switch".

Longitude is front to back, i.e. Spliting the car front to back down the centre. Simply meaning the lights fitted must be the same on both sides.

              Hi there,

On 18 October 2015 I sent two emails to Roads & Maritime & the response to both are below.

Below is the information regarding light bars

ADR13 has been amended to remove the requirement to fit lights in pairs, providing the lights:
Do not exceed four in total
Are wired in conjunction with the high beam circuit of the vehicle Are fitted at the front, symmetrically about the longitudinal centreline Face towards the front of the vehicle

Whilst there is no height limitation the requirement in ADR 13 3.4.3 for the lights to be at the front of the vehicle would limit the placement under your roof rack.

In addition the placement of a light on top of your bullbar should not affect the drivers vision and pedestrian safety. Refer to the publication 'Bull bar tolerances and conditions Applicable in NSW during the two-year exemption period'

Driving lights cannot be mounted on the roof they have to be at the front of the vehicle and no more than 1.4 metres from the ground.

ADR 13 is federal requirements not states all vehicles have to be built to federal requirements.

It means a straight line running across the vehicle i.e. centre of right headlight to the centre of left headlight. ( Longitudinal Centre Of Vehicle )

If you think this information is incorrect or doesn't suit your lighting requirements, ask the questions yourself at the link below.

The wording in the VSI is incredibly ambiguous, extremely easy to argue the point. I will be running a rooftop LED Bar regardless. I don't see how having a lightbar at 1.9m as apposed to 1.4m is dangerous to other drivers. It greatly increases the users safety on the road.

I cannot agree. Jump in a car and have someone drive your Prado at you with the lights on full whack.

I absolutely do not intend on using the LED bar for anywhere near a populated road. That would be quite silly. How much of a difference does half a meter make though?

Fair bit I think. I was on the receiving end and actively searched for the ignorant #%*^%## who hit me. Lights would have been the least of his problems.

Unfortunately in that situation the lights will be in your eyes regardless of how high they are mounted. The driver should be hung up and shot though.
