Removing 150 7 seater safety belts

I want to sell my third row seats that were removed for drawers installation. I need to remove the safety belts. I have easy access to the bolts that hold the floor bracket on, but can't figure out how the top retractor covers come off. I am assuming that once the covers are removed the retractors can be removed and the covers re-fitted. Any ideas?

Hi Gregmacc,

Not a good idea to sell the seats.

For the vehicle to be LEGAL as a five seater, you will need to have a new "Compliance Plate" issued as a five seat vehicle, particularly if you wish to sell it.

That will require an "Engineers Certificate" & possibly a lot of messing around with "Roads & Traffic" to recertify the vehicle.

Before you sell the seats, at least discuss the ramifications with your "'Roads & Traffic Authority".

Keep the seats & avoid the "Agro".

And the "Resale Value"?

I have seen a Prado owned by ARB with its rear belts removed. The top covers must be able to be unclipped and the retractors then unbolted. I too am curious, as I have removed my rear seats in place of a set of drawers. Let us know how you go.

ARB may have removed the rear seats & seat belts, but have they sold the seats?

I doubt it.

Much easier to sell & worth more in original configuration.

Anyone converting a FIVE seater to a SEVEN seater will be required to have the vehicle re certified & a new Compliance Plate issued, in order for the changes to be LEGAL.

I also wanted to remove my 3rd row seat belts when fitting my drawer system (though have not tried to sell the components). In the end I opted not to entirely remove them. I think you will find that you need to remove the entire cargo area trim panel (piece that runs under the window) and then the upper trim panel that covers the rear pillar (piece containing the seat belt 'retractor cover' that you refer to) to remove the retractor, as it does not sit immediately behind the cover. To remove the seat belt from the retractor cover, so you can clip the retractor cover back in the upper trim panel, you need to dismantle the seat belt assembly. I unbolted the retractor, pulled the belt all the way out of the retractor, then locked the rectractor from retracting with some cable ties (so as to not loose the spring tension) prior to removing the lock pin and withdrawing the end of the belt from the retractor. Next is where the problem occurs - the loop that is sewn into the end of the belt that was removed from the retractor is too bulky to fit through the slot on the seat belt buckle, and the buckle is also too bulky to fit through the retractor cover. Thus it cannot be disassembled without cutting the belt. Very frustrating! I even inquired at Toyota re the cost of replacement rectractor covers and you can't buy them - the seat belt assembly is sold complete with retractor cover! So in the end I re-assembled the seat belt end in the retractor, re-mounted the retractor, removed the floor bracket as you have done, wrapped a rag around the floor bracket and tied it up nice and solid behind the trim panel with cable ties so there are no rattles. The seat belt is looped around the retractor cover as shown in this pic. Hope this helps...

im not much help but im am very interested in the bottom trim pieces around the rear seats or buy the whole lot
