    Thanks for the feedback. For the record, mine is a diesel.

    I think the lesson I've learnt from this debacle is;
    1) Ask for the price/quote beforehand and be very specific.
    2) If you're not happy with the price;
    a) Negotiate
    b) Shop around.

    I'm just going to chalk this up as a (costly) experience and move on.

    I may hit you guys up for a mechanic recommendation in 10,000km time;-)

      Reading all of these maybe I should question what happened. Thinking about it more injector clearances were not checked (this was in consultation with the mechanic) and trans fluid was checked, not changed. Maybe that accounts for the price difference?

        Trans fluid flush isn't part of the log book service, so your price is quite reasonable as opposed to awesome

          A 120k service when done by the book, will take all day!
          Toyo hourly rate $130-140? Just labour $a grand + or -?
          Engine oil
          Oil filter
          Spw
          Front diff oil
          Rear diff oil
          Brake fluid
          Fuel filter at tank
          Injector sheets & o-rings
          Cabin filter?
          Transfer case oil?

          About $350 in parts & oils.

          So under $500 cannot get you a real 120k service.

          Remove the valve clearance check
          Save $10-20 in parts.

          Still 3-4 hrs work labour & parts are well over $500.

          General note:

          If there is no leaks, the trans fluid does not need to be checked, but it's a good idea to change it when warranty ends eg; 100k & every 50k thereafter. Then it will just keep working!

            i would still ask for an itemised account so you know what has been done and what hasn't been done
            and let them know that you are getting it checked now by some one independent to make sure it HAS been done !!

            like #### said if they change the injector seats & did a valve clearance your most likely on the money
            get the valve clearance report & the injector sheet part numbers they used

            have a look to see if they did do all the fluids ( if the plugs have new washers fitted & the area is clean or still has the oil stain from the draining

              I'll have to check the invoice when I get home but some things that work in my favour are that the mechanics hourly rate is half what #### said Toyotas is and through work we get the parts cost price.

                Had a look at my invoice. Nil description other than "carried out logbook service" and the parts list which consisted of :Engine oil, gear oil (LS90), gear oil (75w90), brake fluid, air filter, cabin filter, fuel filter, oil filter, consumables, labour (3.5) and enviro levy.
                Looks like it was all carried out except the injector stuff.

                    All the quantities for the figures seem to be in line with Toyota specs (7L engine oil, etc). Is there something I'm missing? Could the difference be accounted by the fact that I get all parts cost price and labour at $76/hr?

                      At that rate sounds about right with aftermarket parts, which will be fine.
