  • 2011 150 VX Going Limp

Every now and then 3 lights come on simultaneously on the dash.
    1. Malfunction Indicator (engine symbol)
    2. TRC, Slip Indicator light (Car skidding symbol)
    3. 4Lo symbol flashes (while the above two are on permanently).
Within about 30 seconds the car fades to limp mode. This is OK if you are on an easy stretch of road but recently got caught on a roundabout.
Turn the ignition off and then restart the car and it drives as normal but the warning lights are still on.
It usually takes 3 or 4 starts and stops and the lights disappear from the dash. This can take from 2 to 24 hours for the lights to disappear without any further effect on the driving.
This problem can occur three times in the one week and then not again for a month. It only seems to happen at relatively low speeds around town and never at high speed on the highway.
I cannot think of any action that brings it on, maybe mildly bumpy roads, a sharp turn but always less than 50 km/h.
Have just done a 3000+ km trip in the last week to Sydney and home via the west. It only let me down once and several times since I got home. Would hate to think about it failing in city traffic.
Local garage computer code says “a major fuel leak” which I know is clearly not the case.
The only thing I can think of was last year in July when I was driving in from the Gibson desert to Uluru and the “fuel filter maintenance required “ came up on the dash.
I drove about 100km into Uluru and had the fuel filter replaced.
The guys at the garage had trouble resetting the system so that the warning disappeared off the dash but they did get it off in the end.
I was wondering if some sequence they used might have upset the computer.
    Look forward to any solutions.

First thing to do is read the ECU codes the car is throwing, then you can start troubleshooting from there.

      Thanks Toyo
Have had ECU read by local garage (not Toyota). Result "major fuel leak".
Will take to Toyota to see if get a different result.

Hi, I recently fitted an EGR blanking plate which causes the ECU to set fault code P0400 AND brings on the same 3 warning lights and puts motor into limp-home mode. I currently reset the fault with Torque diagnostics program I have on my phone and all good till next time. Considering getting the ECU remapped to improve performance and have EGR turned off at same time. Maybe a restriction in the EGR circuit of your Prado? Probably soot.

Hi Smithyuno. I guess if I am going to pull mine apart I may as well do the same. Did you completely blank off or fit one with a 7mm hole?

A blanking plate with no hole will create error codes. That's why a plate with a 6 - 7mm hole is the norm.

I have the error codes on and off. I'll try and get an assessment tomorrow at Toyota. Just trying to work up the courage to get in there and pull out the EGR valve first for a look see if it is blocked. Not a lot of guidance anywhere in this but a few nuts and bolts have never put me off in the past. if I succeed then I will put in a blanking plate with 7mm hole, already ordered.

Hey mate, "Major fuel leak" usually indicates a sudden loss of fuel pressure in the common rail/pressurised side of pump. I would suggest most likely is the SCV, but that is just an Internet diagnosis, best to get it double checked by someone physically. A blocked EGR will not set a "major fuel leak" code. Any chance you know what the actual code is/was?

Check the connectors around the inlet manifold/egr/fuel rail.

Took it to Toyota this morning and checked by techstream. Code for major fuel leak came up again. He said code P0093 and then wrote P0095?. Said this could be the result of the chip increasing fuel pressure in the rail and the ECU calling it a fuel leak? Did not seem too disturbed but offered no further solution. I said I had wound the chip back to zero three weeks ago and still had the warning lights appear since then. He suggested disconnecting the chip altogether, which I will do. Anyway car is running well as has not gone limp once since I've been talking about it on PP.

                      Yes, remove the chip!!!

Had you said it had a chip fitted that would of been the first bit of advise most would have given.

I would put a tenner on the chip being the culprit here, sending the computer the wrong fuel pressure and the computer sensing it as a fuel leak.

Step 1 remove the chip! Most chips ramp up the common rail pressure pretty high, which chip do you have?

Rule one of troubleshooting, undo recent changes and remove any mods.

Some chips work with a fuel restrictor plate which is placed after the rail. This ramps up the fuel pressure to the injectors. So, simply removing the chip may not end the fuel leakage errors.

Tunit Chip (V-CR NTUN114). Chip was installed at least 8 months before problem showed up. Yes will disconnect for a while and see if I can get chip checked.
