  • Sat navigation 150 facelift

Hi all. Apologies if this has been answered previously

I have just purchased a 2014 Prado and have a query regarding the sat navigation or lack of.

Is there a cheap way of adding it to the car, it seems strange that with such an entertainment screen with the apps etc it isn't able to be downloaded cheaply. Is the only option an expensive upgrade?

if you want offroad map as well then, practical option is to get hema ($695) or Vms ($495) GPS unit. surely you can hunt for cheaper price online.
Otherwise Carbon car system does upgrade for whopping $1299.

I actually rang Toyota the other day to ask if the GPS system in the new GXL is retrofittable to my Dec 14 GXL. The answer (which I was expecting but thought I'd ask anyway) was no. After market ones are the only go. Plenty of threads on this forum about them.

Talk to the Toyota auto electrician directly as a private job and see what the answer is. I have a suspicion it should work. You can buy the GPS head unit as a spare part from Toyota and get the sparkie install it.

Anyone know a Toyota Auto Electrician in Melbourne?

Actually, the best person to ask at your local dealer would be the parts guys/gals, toyota issue accessory guides showing what part numbers are required to fit different things to different vehicles. It would be simple bread and butter for whoever orders the parts for predelivery. I would also be asking about getting the PD guys/gals to fit it, they fit radios, reverse cameras, etc. a lot more often than us grease monkey mechanics do.

Do let us know if it is a viable after market option. I'm keen to find a replacement for my 150 Kakadu sat nav system to give me flexibility of map updates without compromising on the current features (cameras, audio controls, phone, etc. etc)

IMO the factory navigation/maps aren't that great anyway...
I've had plenty of instances where it completely misses major turns
Sometimes they're shown on the screen but not narrated

I have a few other gripes, like not being able to set a destination if I'm off road
Alao being unable to do much when the vehicle is moving - I'm sure this is a requirement, but would be handy if the passenger was somehow able to do it

The general layout of the menus is cumbersome too

I find Toyota 2014 VX GPS and maps very good (just make sure you update them). Also covers most fire trails in NSW and many off road tracks which I did not expect. For detail I have VMS.

Best GPS I ever used was in Mercedes E class, but that is in a different price league ... one thing for sure no aftermarket GPS ever came remotely close to it. Merc was perfect.

This is the best "plug & play" option I've seen and was originally going to go down that path myself. I've since seen the light and gone with Hema apps on my phone, iPad. Something fully integrated would be nice but I can think of better things to spend that sort of coin on.
