Great thread this one. I run mine with diff lock out most of the time but I am new to the diff lock game. I recently upgraded to a 2016 gxl 2.8 auto and am still learning how to use it off road. Traction control in the sand is always off. I do have an issue with a sand hill I can not get over in Esperance. Some of you guys might know it. Its the one that exits whylie bay. Anyway what gear do people normaly use for sand hills that require a run up? I have tried many things yet it still beats me.

Sand and dunes are totally different to uphill rocky or shale. Try 16psi HOT, centre diff locked, TC and VSC BOTH off. Lock it in high range 1st gear and go up at about 1800 rpm as this is in the maximum torque range and it will pick up revs easily if needed. This has worked fine for me on all of the Simpson, CSR and Googs tracks. If you get a particularly chopped up dune caused by idiots with 25 or 30psi and using 4000rpm try low range 3rd and 14 or 15 psi.. A hidden advantage of high first is as soon as you are over the top flick it back to drive until the next dune. This means that you do most of say a Simpson crossing just idling along and saving a lot of fuel.
