  • Sudden poor fuel economy Prado 150 diesel

Regularly serviced 105,000 kms on the clock. Have had the car for a year. 3l TD 2010.

Over the last year was getting very regular fuel readings between 11-12l/100km with heavy and soft foot driving. Would get 400kms from first quarter bar of fuel meter, 600kms at half way mark etc.

Now after the last 4 fill ups fuel economy has jumped to 13+/100km with only soft foot driving. Only getting 300kms at first quarter' 500km at half way mark etc.

My question is what could cause the sudden change? No changes in modifications, no change tyre pressures or weight of vehicle. I do have a fuel manager kit pre filter fitted for last 20,000kms. Any chance this would cause bad fuel economy if dirty?

Would appreciate some feedback as fuel economy is one thing that does my head in.

Have you checked your air filter?
    Try giving it a clean.
There is always alot more dust in the air in summer

One of our vehicles has 250,000k, it was getting 13+ now it's more like 11.5 with some offroad included. I can get 10's. so it should be around there with good maintenance.

It could be a number of things.

Renew air filter, more importantly clean maf sensor with crc maf sensor cleaner & blow dry. That might fix it.

Need to plug in & do a diagnostic.

An egr flow reduction plate should help. Also the intake if its caked will contribute.

      Worn injectors will contribute.

If the egr soot has been wearing the rings, bores & valves, compressions could be down, this could cause 10% increase easily.

Ive had a similar issue, not being able to get diesel economy under 10L/100k. A colleague of mine with a ford ranger has had the same issue. Unexpectedly high fuel usage. We've both put it down to the quality of diesel that has been available here lately.
We've both since tanked elsewhere and the economy has improved.

I usually run on BP ultimate or if I have to plain old BP, I put some Caltex Vortex in when BP not available and my economy was much worse than BP.

I would try a different fuel for a quick fix but then give it a clean anyway, always works better when clean.

I usually use the Caltex Vortex and its not been an issue...until lately. My last refill was BP diesel (the foamiest diesel I've ever used) and Im sitting at 9.5 with a mix of highway and town driving.

I have never had a foaming problem with BP, even from hi flo pumps. Maybe the mixing of brands caused the foaming problem.

Late edit : I use BP Ultimate

My local BP diesel (not premium) foams badly. Is everyone running Vortex happy ? Any rattley injectors on the Caltex ?

                    That would be purely speculation

I also use BP Ultimate. Two BP servos within 750m of each other near me, one foams like hell, one doesn't.

Ive also come to the conclusion that if you cant see the diesel sitting there in the filler tube at the end, it aint full.

Honestly, can't pick any difference between Vortex or Ultimate.
