Head unit on/off button works intermittently

Hi, i have a 2012 Prado Kakadu that is causing me some grief. The head unit on/off button seems to work for a while and then for no apparent reason stops working. When it stops working i need to use the 'Audio' button on the display unit to change stations. I have to use the volume control buttons on the steering wheel to change the volume. Then next time i jump in the car (usually after my wife has driven it) the on/off button and station selectors on the head unit work again. It is driving me mad!

Can anyone advise what is causing this issue? I don't think it is a hardware issue but rather a user issue.
