  • Sluggish Accelaration

    Hi,

I have a 2010 V6 Kakadu, no mods, everything is stock. I have it for almost a year now. Bought it with 105k on it and now it is 112k. This is my 1st 4WD so don;t really know much

These are the issues i have:

    1. the car is struggling going uphill. It seems that it is not or very slow in responding to acceleration. Even if I depress the accelerator pedal fully it takes such a long time to pick up speed and i believe that it does not really pick up speed corresponding to how much i depress the accelerator pedal. This is also evident when coming from full stop on a stop light, takes a long time to pick up. This is in "D" mode. Another example is when merging through to highway e.g. M4, it really takes a while to pick up speed.

    2. I also noticed a burning smell after driving especially after driving a long uphill road. Also smell it when i drive through an enclosed garage. Can't really tell if it is due to the break heating up, what is the best way to check this?

Just had the transmission oil change done by Toyota Windsor. They told me that the color of the oil taken out was just a little bit darker compared to the new oil. I was monitoring the ATF temp for a while now and i can see an improvement in the ATF temp after the tranny oil change as it is mostly around 60-65, average temp is around 60 to 75 but sometimes rising to about 85 to 90 when doing uphill. Are the temps about right?

I also reported the sluggishness to toyota several times and they check and could not find any issue (that's what they told me) but after my peristence they said that they reset the Transmission ECU anyway.

There are no indication lights whatsoever showing up e.g. transmission overheat etc...no codes when i do the scan on my scanguage.

any inputs as to what is causing this and what needs to be checked will be very much appreciated.

    cheers

Should have bought the turbo diesel..... Lol, just kidding.

    Hard one from here.
Are you saying it started when you got the tranny done?

Did the smell start after tranny being done?

    ATF oil temp is good.

Check air filter, clean maf sensor.
    Use premium fuel.
    Exhaust blockage?
    Check fuel preassure.
    Diagnostic check.
    Lots of guessing.
I diagnosed a vehicle problem over the phone on Saturday & I was right, so you may get lucky.

        Thanks Anthony,

No the smell was there before the tranny oil change, it was what prompted me to have it done.

Yep, will have those things checked, this is my issue here in Sydney, I don't know any mechanic that can be trusted, Toyota don't seem to know what they are doing, really frustrating.

        Thanks again Anthony.

Pretty simple one, turn key nothing happens, high beams & power etc seems good. Sounds like Starter. Lol........
Could have been battery or connection or immobilzer issue, but jagged it!

I get lucky with harder ones too, combination of being a smart thinker & experience, you will catch me with experience one day......

                Arien,

From which Sydney dealer did you purchase it?

My 2010 GXL petrol seems a bit sluggish at times, until I take it to a country road and plant the accelerator - "drive it like I stole it" - only problem these days are the highway patrol cops and mobile speed cameras hiding in the bushes. Drives a bit better after a country sprint.

Thought about a re-mapping of the ECU, quoted $1,200 from a company at Alexandria. The missus is not happy when I buy a few bottles of wine around $30 each, so the re-mapping would cause a yelling match you would hear over in S.A.

                  Hi Yowie,

Got it from Castle Hill Toyota.

My friend bought a kakadu petrol too, 2011 model and it drives better, he said it did drive it hard the first few long trips, he even said that he saw carbon came out from exhaust but his one has modified exhaust with 2 exhaust tips, sounds good too

Which company is offering the ECU remap? Can you PM me please.

My Prado is in great condition and the kids love it too, my only complain is that sluggishness.

                  Cheers

                    Arien,

Autohaus One at Alexandria is the re-mapping place I called. There are a few more about on the internet.

I had my exhaust changed, back from the extractors. A bigger pipe with a small straight flow muffler, and a small resonator muffler just before the end to reduce any drone sound. Mid range overtaking is better, also better for towing the van.

I bought mine from Windsor Toyota, as I was given a good price, only problem is the drive over there from southern Sydney. My extended warranty ended with last month's service, so wondering if I will drive back there for servicing again.

                    Dave.
