  • Water crossings in the 150

    G'day all,
Went out to Boggy Hole over the weekend. Decent trip and recommend it for anyone heading out that way. I did have an issue though. Towards the end of the track there is a water crossing, about 10m long and looks like it's a puddle. Turns out it's bonnet deep water. Before everyone gets on my case about checking water crossings before doing them etc. I know I was in the wrong by going without checking but the guy that was in the car with me had been down there 2 days earlier and knew about the crossing but didn't tell me about it...
Anyway the end result was a bonnet deep water crossing in High Range and 'auto' (no gear selected), this resulted in the pollen filter being saturated with water ingress. The battery light also began to flash rapidly. Checked the voltage and all normal and all connections secure. After about 20 mins the light went away and hasn't come back on since.
The next day the car would hesitate to start, it would crank twice, then everything would shut down briefly (all lights dash lights off), then crank again and start with no warning lights or anything. It had a pattern like crank, crank, nothing, crank, start. This only happened 50% of the time. Haven't had either of these issues since Sunday afternoon.
My thoughts are that I got water in some sensors that I shouldn't have and since drying it is fine. Can anyone suggest what I can do to prevent this in the future?

Park it where you can work on it.
    Give it a massive wash/rinse/clean.
    Lots of water through alternator.
Give it a massive blow dry & more time to dry.
Remove starter & clean mud out.
    Replace cabin air filter.
    Check air filter. Check everything.
    Lube tail shaft.
It back together & test/take for a good drive.
Then you have done what you can to stop further damage & return it to how it should be kept.
Did you get muddy water in your trans? Might be worth a flush.

Prevention is check holes & avoid at all costs.
Go through slow & gentle to save spraying the whole engine bay, if its deep & boggy don't do it.

Clean water is ok, mud = money.

Thanks for that. The water was clean water (not mud at all). Any suggestions for what to spray with lanolin (or similar) before future crossings?
