  • Aftermarket AM/FM aerial compatabiltiy for Prado 150 VX

Has anyone installed an aftermarket aerial to their Prado 150. I am attempting to install a ZCG Scalar ZN3 am/fm aerial to my 2012 VX Prado. The aerial is mounted on the bull bar. I have tried two different aerial adaptors to allow connection to the radio head unit but still have terrible static/interference. The reception is far worse than the reception obtained with the standard rear window mounted aerial. I have spoken to a number of radio techo's and none can offer any real satisfaction in resolving the issue. One states it may be an issue with the built in aerial amplifier the head unit has and the computer is not correctly identifying the new aerial?? I did originally try a new GME am/fm aerial but the result was similar, this is why I went for the up market Scalar aerial. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I replaced the factory radio unit in my 2010 150 GXL with an alpine head unit.

From what I can remember is that the factory unit had two antenna cables that connected into the back of the head unit. The aftermarket head unit only had the one standard antenna connection. I was able to source a Toyota to standard aftermarket antenna adapter, but I was only able to use one of the two antenna cables. And yes, my radio reception has suffered as a result, but I do not really feel that it is something that causes me too much grief.

When I installed the Alpine unit, I googled around to see if there was a way to use both antennas in the aftermarket unit, but this was not possible. I seem to recall reading something that the factory unit has some intelligence to compare the signals from the two factory antennas and switch to whichever one is getting better reception. Perhaps this circuitry in the factory head unit is not compatible with the aftermarket aerial. It may be worth googling for how guys go with installing aftermarket head units as you may find some information for how the dual antennas play together.

    Best of luck.

Thanks Crammed for your response. The information I have gleaned is similar, the intel unit in the head unit amplifies different signals to best suit available reception. All a bit of a mystery. Will keep on researching. Ewhen
