  • Penrite oil

    Hey, ive been using Penrite HPR5 5/40 oil in my prado for ages... no issues.

    Recently i switched to Penrite HPR10 10/40. no issues and i cant really see the difference between the two.

    I live in canberra so its hot in summer and cold in winter.

    What do you guys reckon is the way to go?

        I use HPR 5-40 and that is what the dealer and book recommends as the preferred oil (5-30) for the diesel engine.

            I note the HPR10 is recommended for petrol. Whats the recommendation for diesel?

              Sorry for the delay, been out for over a month, mobile doing injectors & up the cape.

              I think the penrite range is very good oil & also pretty good value.
              I keep diesel 10 & 15 in stock.
              Traditionally 15w oils have been used for diesels. Now many manufacturers want to put low vis oil chasing economy.
              1kd-ftv For Vic, I use diesel10 from April to October. Diesel 15 oct to April.
              It's all about anticipation of the vehicle use till next oil change.
              For the cape trip I ran diesel15, I knew I would be mainly hot temps & highway hot oil temps.
              Now home I run diesel 10 ( did10,000k while away oil still very clean :-) ).
              Some people have opinions, this changing is not the go. Well I might be Irish & it works.
              5w is for cold climates & new engines. Also some really want 5w.
              Dealerships buy in bulk & often one oil suits all, usually a light oil - value.
              If you consult your TOYOTA handbook, you will see the climate range allow for 5-10-15-20w, all will be fine.
              So there's no wrong, it's about the best protection - decision.
              Lighter oil will protect you better at start up, which is where much of your wear happens.
              So for cold starts & short trips go for it 10w is fine. It will will be fine Australia wide.
              But if your up north, it's never cold, it's a long way between towns & your doing Klm's.
              If you use too light oil in an engine that has some wear it can burn oil.
              You could use diesel 15 & your engine will last longer than you, these engines are tough.

              Stop worrying about which oil, there are 5 important things if you want to look after your 1kd-ftv engine.
              Egr
              Injectors
              Oil changes
              Fuel fiters
              Air filter


              Egr = stop that soot ASAP, this is by far the most important to sort out ASAP.
              Injectors= check them every 10,000k change out every 120k (new ones may last longer - will advise in years to come)
              Change oil regularly 10k is ok if you do high Klm's & have a plate in.
              If short trips I'd go every 5k
              If no plate your mad & should change up within every 5k.
              Make sure the fuel filters are getting changed, tank 20k under bonnet 40k.
              Make sure air filter in clean & make sure it is sealed - they can leak - grease the rubber seal.
