  • Hard to start

G'day. Was hoping someone would know about my problem. After going on a trip to cape york my 2011 d4d has become hard to start. When i press the start/stop all i get is a "click" almost like a flat battery. After reading the book it is possible to do an overide start. Clutch in brake on hold the button for 15 secconds. This works some times. I always get it started but can take 20 tries some mornings and when it starts i get an engine light with 4low flashing. I think it has something to do with water crossings i did. Has anyone herd of this or know anything about it b4 i head to toyota. Any help would be great thanks.

    Starter motor with water

Had the same problem after doing some water crossings. You will have to take the starter apart, clean it up the contacts, grease it up and then it should be good to go. I am in process of rebuilding mine.
There is a good thread on this

        When did you get back?
        Give it a few weeks.
Likely water & will dry up.
Very common problem along with other problems including alternator when you put your vehicle through that.

Sounds exactly like the problem I had post lots of water crossings. Turned out to be the starter solenoid, specifically water had made it past the seal and corroded the copper and now allowing enough current though to start the car.

Took the starter out and cleaned the terminals as apparently they don't sell spare contacts through toyota. Then re-sealed the solenoid with some gasket maker stuff. No issues since!
Way easier job than I thought, only thing that was hard was the bolts being super tight. Bit of wd40 and a home-made extended breaker bar and it came out.
I can describe in detail how to do it if you need. Cheers

Those contacts in the second picture look the same as my 90 series petrol. I got a set of contacts from an auto sparky shop for about $8.00 however both were the longer type as seen at the bottom of the photo. Make sure you cut the longer one down for the other one otherwise it will short on the plunger when energised and hold the starter on. Found that out the hard way but by then I was pretty good at getting it out and refitting which is a bastard of a job on the 3.4 petrol the first time. Had it out, fixed and back in in about 35 minutes!
