  • Alternator Issue

    Hi all,

I'm new to this, so hopefully I'm posting in the right spot.

I have a 2015 Prado 150 with 25000km on the clock and during a recent trip to Googs Track I had my alternator fail. We were nearly 800km from home and the dash light came on. Tried everything we could, but couldn't fix it. It's now been at Toyota for almost a month waiting on a new one from Japan. They haven't been able to tell me what went wrong, just that it failed.

Has anyone else had any issues with theirs?

    Thanks

Did you do any water/mud? Alternators have a tendency to fail after those.

There were a few puddles, but nothing more than 10-15cm in depth.

Sounds like a tough one. Hopefully its a warranty job?

Geez Wolfie you have more patience than me, if mine was waiting for a month for parts I would be jumping on them. There are surely vehicles in stock they can rat one from, bugger their bleating about potential lost sale

Jesus, I would be giving them a spray. A month for an alternator ? Surely they could put in an aftermarket one and swap it out later ? Or ask another dealer for one. Hope they have given you a loan car that you like.

But yes alternator failure seems to be relatively common on 150 series but not at such a young age.

Thanks for the responses all. I was given a loan car which was good. Apparently they had none in the country and don't do aftermarket would you believe... I'm not sure that fills me with any confidence for the future. I got it back today. Fingers crossed its the last time I have this issue.

Yeah mate we had ours fail in Cairns after doing the cape in 2014....Same issue, none in country and a quoted 4 week wait for the boat....Facing a 4 week stay in Cairns wasn't fun....Fortunately I found a dual a/c one in a wreck in Sydney and had it overnighted...Nil issues since

Mine is a 2013 last before update. Alt failed at 30,000 just before end of warranty, Low voltage when it was checked with dash light showing red.
Replaced under warranty, took a week to get parts.
                      Had never been off road
                      Cheers

I also had our fail on our way back from reaching the Cape - Had to drive and swap batteries between my car and the people we were travelling with. We limped in Mossman where I called RACQ and arranged for it be repaired. Rang Toyota in Cairns and they had one on the shelf for $750. Spoke to the Auto-Elect in Mossman who had been replacing the Prado/Hilux ALTs with Aftermarket ones with great success, so I gave him the go ahead. The Aftermarket ones also charge at a higher voltage too.
