  • Prado 150 rear door upgrade

Hi everyone, does anyone know or have seen a different rear door set up. Eg barn doors etc
Any info would be greatly appreciated as I'm over this door when towing my caravan.
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers Slippery

I've only seen the LC200 style lift up/drop down tailgate to let you reduce the amount of fuel you can carry.

I wouldn't imagine it would make life any easier with a van on.

Perhaps you could consider getting a rear bar with twin arms so that you have to open three doors instead

There is indeed a different door that was available on the limited edition Altitude model without the spare mounted to it. Only problem is that it wont solve your caravan issues as it is still swung from the same side. It would offer the benefit of a lift up glass hatch for quick access, but would be a lot of coin to hand over just for that feature!

      A search will reveal all.

Modifying the caravan as this will be the cheaper option. I tried the lexus gx but has same large door. I really thought there would be an aftermarket option.

Have you tried changing your hitch and gas bottle setup. On my caravan we had the gas bottles remounted and rectified to fit into the front boot. We also had the hitch changed to a DO35. We had absolutely no issues from that point onwards.

The swinging door was a pain for us also with the boat and the camper, and trying to open the door to clear the hitch or the boat or the spare tyre on teh camper.

In the end we did a couple of things. I got an off road low profile Hyland hitch.

We also got a slightly longer tow bar "hitch receiver" to give more space for the door to fully open without hitting the stone guard. (Once again there are limits to lengthening the hitch receiver so you need to be sure of what you are doing). We also moved the boat and the bow post back slightly on the trailer (turned out it was in fact too far forward in the first place, and the ball down force weight was checked etc to be sure that the trailer would still be stable etc), and we placed the spare wheel for the camper flat on the draw bar ....all that helped us get to the point where we could open the Prado rear door when towing the camper or the boat without hitting anything...interestingly our travel companions have a drop down rear door on their Landcruiser and they damaged it badly when it opened down onto their caravan handbrake lever..so there can be issues with either type of door I guess.

Cheers for the replies. I have the Hyland hitch already and no dramas there. The door hits the stone gaurd. Door doesnt open fully so can't slide drawers out to access them.

Our caravan guy took a look and has decided to move gas bottles and put stone deflector on a hinge so this can be moved to open rear door. I dont have a heap of room on the aframe as I've also got a dirt bike bracket mounted to the front.

Yeh the drop downs do have issues too. Barn doors are the go. Like on a dx patrol or gx landcruiser! Cheers for all you ideas

I saw a Prado GX with barn doors . I think they were a special order for the mining industry

Did you look at a stone stomper instead of your stone guard. We have one fitted to our van from new, plus our van manufacture had the option of extended drawbar with 4 kg gas bottles instead of 9kg.

Yeh I've looked at those. Still would hit gas as we upgraded to the 8.5kg. We go away for 4 weeks at a time and need gas to run fridge n cook. We are looking at extending the hitch on the caravan. I only need 40mm now with the stone guard on a hinge. Thanks everyone for your ideas ans input. Appreciated !

When you pull up to park, turn the front wheels to the left and park the Prado on a small angle to the van. If you only need 40mm extra, you won't have to park on much of an angle to get the door right open so you can get at your drawers. Once you get into the habit this works well. If you forget, I am confidant your front seat passenger will remind you. We have to park on an angle to the left since we upgraded our Tvan to one with a front storage box.
                      Cheers

Thanks Hulbyw for this great suggestion. I am considering buying a Tvan with front storage box and was concerned that I wouldn't be able to access the rear with the TVan attached.

The Mk III with front box is close and requires parking at a slight angle to clear. The Mk IV has a larger front box and may need more of an angle.

Agree. We have a Mk4 with a front box and need to park on a greater angle than with a Mk3.

I've had the hitch on the camper extended 60mm. No more worries!
