  • Erratic auto transmission gear changes

Just last week bought a 2011 GXL 150 series diesel with 150k. Maintenance schedule up-to-date, great condition, runs beautifully - except for the transmission issue which surfaced yesterday. Decending from the Blue Mountains to Penrith (no load) transmission would occasionally not change down as one would expect under braking but instead would miss a cog and go from 5 to 3 or when back on the flat would linger in 4 with no load before eventually going back to 5 and then seem to stay in 5 longer than I thought appropriate before going up to 4. At another point, going around a corner at low speed a bit of an initial shudder and hesitation as it changed down on acceleration. Later on, after an hour break in the journey gear changes back to smooth as silk again. What's going on here - oil, small component failure or a total rebuild? (which resulted in waking at 3:30 AM thinking/worrying about it)!!

Always start with the simple, inexpensive stuff. In this case ATF; check quantity and quality. I assume you are not getting any warning lights, not being an auto user, does anyone else know if the computer holds fault codes on these new fangled thangs?
    cheers
    Steve

Yes, that's right, no warning lights at this stage Steve.

        As above I think
Get it serviced new filter fluid and flush with genuine fluid or penrite fs or lv
Also maybe disconnect the battery overnight and let the ecu reset
Maybe get the ecu reflashed with latest firmware if it is out of date
        Cheers

My 120 was doing similar things so did a full flush on the auto trans. That made it a lot better but still had some occasional weird stuff happening. Gave the maf sensor a clean and it now goes just like it should. Best 20 minutes I ever spent on it!

Thank you so much gentlemen. I'll be doing all of the above tomorrow and I will report back after that. Hopefully you've nailed the problem. Cheers!

Got the transmission flushed and new fluid. Drove to Echuca and dragged a medium sized caravan (1600 kg) back to Sydney - vehicle didn't miss a beat. Thanks guys, I love Pradopoint! Only issue was trying to find the right towing mirrors. In the end, did the journey quite safely just using the large standard mirrors that the Prado has, though I would be more comfortable with a little more rear vision. Any suggestions on particular brands that suit well - and with no vibration?

Correct fluid & level is Important. It may have been low.
However sometimes they do weird things.
Overall the a750f is bulletproof & we don't ever have any issues to worry about.
                Thankx for sharing.

I only tow a caravan a few times a year, and I didn't want something that would be attached to the door etc, so I got a set of Camec towing mirrors, they fit onto the side mirrors with two rubber straps (which you can't see in the photo, they criss-cross from the top and you can see the clips at the end of the rubber straps on the bottom of the mirror) and also two small (padded) thumb screws at the top of the mirror...no vibration, and they work fine, and fold up reasonably well.
