Broken passenger side wing mirror mount

well I was lucky enough to catch the tip of my side mirror on my garage when reversing a trailer and have snapped the alloy swivel mount off at the base of the mirror. The mirror/indicator/lens motor itself is otherwise fine however Toyota have quoted about $500 (GX non motorised) for a replacement mirror assembly, I cant buy just the swivel mount.

I'm looking for alternative options, this looks pretty good: http://www.carparts2u.com.au/files/detail.php?id=7709 However Ill ring around local wreckers and see if anyone has a part.

Can anyone direct me to instructions on getting the mirror off the door? It seems ill need to remove the door skin, however experience has taught me that there is always a plastic clip you don't know about that gets busted and means you need a new part (that Toyota will probably only sell as a complete door assembly :cry.

Any help or directions would be greatly appreciated.

I took my drivers door skin off the other week. Was pretty easy with all the clips however there were two screws under the large plastic trim on the vertical grab handle which pops out easily. There was also a screw hidden on the inner door latch hidden behind an insert plastic panel. So open the inner door latch and use a butter knife to pop out the plastic panel panel behind the latch to reveal the screw. That's all I remember, the rest were just clips. There's a triangle shaped plastic to also remove on the front corner of the window to reveal the 3 nuts that hold the mirror on.

I think you will find this will show you exactly how to remove the mirror.

well it's pretty easy to swap the mirrors over, but I found that there is an easier way to get the door skin back on. If you follow the video you have to bend the door skin and sort of try Tom manipulate the pin clips into the holes near the mirror whilst trying to get the window seal to clip over the top of the door metal. I broke one clip and could not get the thing to go back without fear of damage.


If you take a about ten seconds to unclip the window seal from the door skin at the top you can then slot the window seal into place on the top of the door and then the door skin just pushes straight on without any manipulation. To get the window seal off you just use a flat screwdriver in the four clips along the door skin and it pops off.

As for the non genuine mirror I bought its a tawianese "king mirror". I got it off a bloke on ebay who was good to deal with but to be honest it's pretty flimsy. The door mount is plastic and there is wobble in the body. To be honest for $145 it'll do, I think I can get a mate to tig weld the mount on the one I broke back together in a month or two so I'll put that back on the door and be done with it.

If anyone is interested in an update... the mirror I bought off ebat nearly fell off - it wobbled and shook itself to bits.

I got a mate to tig weld the bracket on my broken one back together and refitted it which worked perfectly. I sent the guy from ebay a message with a video of the mirror shaking as I drove and after some discussion he sent me a return authorisation and refunded my money.

Pretty satisfied with the outcome but I wouldn't recommend buying an ebay wing mirror.
