  • Petrol 150's

    Hi,

I don't want a diesel due to the fact that my wife's going to use the car for her very short commute to work every day and I didn't want to risk issues with DPF's, etc. so we're now looking at a petrol model.

I did a ton of research into the diesel 150, but don't know much about the V6. Can anyone tell me anything about them in terms of reliability? What kind of km's do people get out of these? Any common faults? Easy/ cheap to fix?

I'm pretty familiar with the pricing on the D4D, but am wondering what $40k would get me as they seem to be fairly rare, so prices are all over the place for similar models.

For example, how's the pricing on this:

    Thanks in advance

Not sure about the 4l but I had a 90 series petrol owned it for a year and did 70000 kms and never serviced it and it was bullet proof. It had 300000 klm on it in total.

Pricing wise sounds reasonable at a dealer even though it is a 6 year old car. Redbook says 29k - 32k privately so sounds about right alowing for the fact red book is a little high in my experience.

There's reports of 400,000km+ from routinely serviced 4.0L petrol engines. Do a search of the forum for more info.

As above. Plenty of very high mileage 4.0 v6's.
There is a number of threads on this forum in regards to them.
I know of one personally with now over 550k and still going fine.

Great, thanks. Is the service schedule every 10k as with the diesel? Is there anything specific to check for when buying?

I have a 2010, 150 series V6. @ 135000km. Bought new. I have had no problems with the engine at all. It runs sooooo much smother than the DIE-sel oil burner and has soooo much extra grunt. The only drawback is the fuel consumption. Around town it can get up to +14L\100km. Ouch. But I did drag off a P plater in a Camry at the lights once which I though was pretty funny. Maybe not for him. 2+tonne beast drags off mum and dads taxi. haha. I am getting less than 12.5L\100km on the highway. For the other Prados I've driven at work, the diesel still averages about 12.5L\100km around town anyway.
I have a mate who works for Toyota and he reckons that they get so many of those 3L diesels with injector, pump and piston problems its not funny. He said they have never seen a V6 with engine trouble. That may be because there aren't as many or because they haven't messed with the V6 formula too much over the years and aren't as highly strung as the current crop of Toyota diesels are. I drove my farther in law's facelift 150 series, diesel and I much preferred my older 150 to his. Its just nicer to have the extra power and not so much engine noise and harshness. As for the new 2.8L diesel? It's a total POS and a disaster waiting to happen. We have several new 2.8L Hiluxs to drive around the pit at work and they are absolute buckets of puss in every way imaginable.
When buying look for any oil leaks (der!) as well as valve train noise under acceleration. Also any ticking or popping during acceleration.
