4lo, engine warning and VS light on- engine running rough - what scanner do i buy?

hi guys
I recently bought a 2010 VX and the 4lo, engine warning and VS lights are on and the is engine running rough - I got it for a good price knowing it had an issue so am not complaining yet!.

After lots of searching the issue could be so wide ranging it seems like I should get an OBD(?) scanner? - I am handy with a spanner, can work my way around a laptop but have absolutely no experience/knowledge of scanners
So I would like to know what to buy and where to buy (ebay?, repco??)

Any tips would be greatly appreciated

You don't state what motor? Petrol/ Diesel.

You'll need to get the codes read to see whats going on with it, only way to find out. Or ask on here as there might be a member who can help you out.

thanks Piggy - good point - sorry its a 3l diesel and yes I want to read the codes hence wanting to know what scanners others have bought - I was looking at a "Launch" OBD2 scanner on ebay for about 60 bucks - but wanting to hear if that end of the market is a waste of time - ie should I be buying a 2-300 model?

We run a launch at work. Was dearer than that however. It does all codes and even reads some my snap on reader doesn't.
