I just ordered 6 also ..... Pelican Parts must be wondering what's the hell's going on down here in Oz

Incidentally I spoke to a BMW dealer yesterday and they quoted me about $50 each with a minimum 2 week delay with order having to be placed on Germany.

Thanks for your help guys .... like Trev I couldn't find the item on the Pelican website despite numerous searches.

My local beemer dealer had 1 for $68 - I didn't bother checking leadtimes on the balance.

Re: Luggage hooks for VX and Kakadu

I hassled the Parts Section of a Toyota Dealership for the part number of the genuine Toyota luggage eyes that cost $77 and are supposedly available. I thought that I would share the part number with you all. No such listing and they searched very hard on their computer using all sorts of key words. There is no genuine Toyota part. Trust me. Go for the BMW part.
          Hi Laok,

There is a genuine Toyota part my local dealer bought it in for me and I have actually fitted it to my tracks, before giving it back to him on learning the price.

I will re visit him and get the part number. He (Parts guy) did say that that the description was quite deceptive and took him a while to track.... Plenty of trust being shared my hooks from Pelican are under way and should arrive this week or early next....Price was the decider for me and your informative post....

My luggage hooks from pelican arrived this week. Only complaint was that it was a big box for the small bits. Thought I was in for something extra. Hooks are great. Tried them out and spot on. Once again Laok great find

A big apology and a "Oops" to Slip n Away.

Slip n Away supplied me with the Toyota Part Number (6631005040) and I verified it with two different Toyota Dealerships. Both dealerships were gob-smacked by the fact that they would never have found the Luggage Eyes had I not told them the part number. They both made notes and stated that they were going to inform their sales people. In all fairness to the sales guys there was no known part (to them) so they had no idea. Toyota Australia had no idea and still don't.

Kudos to Slip n Away and his Toyota Dealership parts guy for being good sleuths.

Now it is up to you as customers to make your choice on price and availability. BMW or Toyota ?

The issue of not being able to tie anything down in the rear of my Prado was a big concern to me and I would like to praise this Pradopoint website for allowing us all to share information.

Re: Luggage hooks for VX and Kakadu

Went back to my Toyota Dealership from where I purchased the Prado (near the hills in W.A.). I wanted to look over a new Kakadu to see what switches get illuminated under different conditions (lights on, accessories on, etc.). They were great and got a brand newie ready for me to crawl around in and play with the switches.

Anyway, showed them the six luggage eyes I have in the rails in the rear of mine and they are impressed. They may fit four as standard in their new Kakadu to prevent any buyer having the run-around that we all have had. I gave them the Toyota part number and we looked it up on the parts computer. Sure enough there is a Toyota part but it was $80+ each. I can get them for just over half that price from Pelican Parts in Canada.

I'm sure that if the dealership buy them in and fit them it will be cheaper than when we buy them after purchasing the vehicle. They did offer me a special deal but I declined as I already have six. It was very nice of them though.

So, if you are buying a Kakadu or VX, ask for four luggage eyes as part of the purchasing deal. There is another posting (SOFT FLOOR MATERIAL) about the rubber cargo mat and I recommend that you get one of those too.

Hey all, very interesting reading. I'm glad some very clever people had been able to solve this one. Just ordered myself a set of the Beemer hold downs off the pelican site. Out of interest does anyone know what the load limit on these might be??

I don't know who makes them. It sure isn't BMW. They seem to be a European part (rails and eyes) and the vehicle manufacturer just sources them. BMW put the rails and the eyes in their X5. Toyota just fit the rails and make you jump through hoops finding out what to do with the rails.

The RAV4 has luggage eyes already fitted but of a different type (bolted, not rail-type). We Prado purchasers are treated differently.

If I knew who made them I would be right onto it for you and trying to ascertain the load rating. You could try asking Pelican Parts but they just get the part as a Beemer item.

I have trawled the Internet and found that Saab, BMW, and Audi all use the rails and lashing eyes (as they call them). Quite a common fitting on European cars it seems. However, I cannot find any load specifications. It might be a case of suck it and see.

As long as mine prevent anything from flying around in a crash and Kung Fu-ing me to death and also stops anything else from taking an unauthorised tour of the rear of my vehicle then I am happy.

It's no good asking Toyota, most of the Toyota dealerships and Toyota Australia Head Office haven't a clue. In fact a few dealerships here in Perth now know more about this issue than Toyota Head Office who are not much more than a call centre who just fob you off with some lame bulls#$t answer.

Re: Luggage hooks for VX and Kakadu

I just called Toyota Motor Corporation Australia on 1800 252 097 and quoted my original enquiry reference of 2010-053676.

I wanted to offer them the Luggage Eyes Toyota part number for all the future queries from Prado owners who do not know about this website. They were simply not interested when I tried to tell them that I have the Toyota part number for their information and recording.

I was given a blase ('who cares') attitude and told that it was not their problem but the dealer's problem if they (dealer) didn't know the part number. They did not want to know the part number or listen to anything I had to say.

I have informed a few Toyota dealers here in Perth but I cannot notify all of the dealerships in Australia. That was the reason for my call. I foolishly thought that they would be interested and maybe send out an information memorandum to the nation's dealerships on this issue.

'Slip n Away' found the Toyota part number (smart-arse; LOL) and I just wanted to spread the word.

I now ask myself why I bothered even thinking about helping Toyota. They don't care about me.

You can all read into this whichever way you like but for me it shows that they simply do not give a damn. The original enquiry was closed off and that was that.

Thank goodness that we all swap information on this website and help each other. All power to the Internet.

Toyota seriously need to lift their game.

Yes, been there done that. Got nowhere. Tried a dealership in U.K. who hand-balled it to Toyota U.K. who asked for my VIN number, ascertained that my car was in Australia and flicked my query to Toyota Australia. You know from my previous postings what Toyota Australia are like and how much they care.

I got my luggage/lashing eyes but only thanks to Pradopoint and this posting.

Its simply a matter of watching whats happening and moving the flap with your hand. If you install Luggage Hooks you will see what I mean.......

This is an important point for those with electric third row seats. I attended at the dealership from where I purchased my Prado and showed them the luggage/lashing eyes. I have mentioned this before. I told them of HarleyGuy's warning and later I decided to see just what happens for myself. I removed my rubber cargo mat and operated the seat switch. Sure enough the luggage/lashing eye can foul the floor panel that lifts up as the seat rises. I had to manually pull the panel clear of the eyes. Easy to do but I wasn't game to see what would happen if the panel jammed against an eye and whether the motor would detect an obstruction and stop the seat or damage would be the result.

                                Solution:
                                1) Remove the eyes before you raise the seats; or
                                2) Manually supervise the seat raising and pull the panel clear of the eyes.

In my mind this is no excuse for Toyota not supplying the eyes with the vehicle. However,I do think that it may have influenced them because not many vehicle owners RTFM (Read The F...... Manual) and they would have had heaps of damage claims regardless of any warning in the Owner's Manual.
