The Vx and Kakadu models have rail type slots on the back of the 3rd row seats for use with the optional luggage hooks (correction: they are called deck hooks in the manual), rather than the conventional tie-down points on other models. I went along to my local Toyota parts department today hoping to get pricing and see how they operate. Unfortunately they knew nothing at all about them, and said they weren't on their computer system. If anyone gets any info on these I'd be most interested.

Re: Luggage hooks for VX and Kakadu
Can you measure up the width of the narrow slot and the wider slot? And possible the width of the channel itself? I'm wondering if the channel nuts from Rhino can be inserted into those slots. I have some channel nuts to compare with your measurements. If they can fit, you can then attach eyebolts into the channel.

The narrow slot measures 14mm, the wider slot 25mm and the channel 35mm. Would be interested to know if the Rhino channel nuts would fit. Incidentally I've just sent an email to Toyota requesting info on availablity of the deck hooks.Geoff

Re: Luggage hooks for VX and Kakadu
Hi Geoff,
The channel nut dimensions are
L: 34mm
W: 19mm
D: 8.5mm
So I believe that you are in luck. Just need a mudguard washer between the channel and lifting eyebolt to spread the load.
The channel nuts are $1.75. I bought my lifting M10 eyebolts for $5.21 and 3/8" I.D x 1.25" O.D. SS304 mudguard washers for $0.29. Total $7.25.

Are all these parts available from Rhino dealers? And pardon my ignorance (I'm not very mechanically minded) but what is a mudguard washer .. will any washer of the correct dimensions work?
Incidentally this is the reply I got from Toyota Australia. What a bloody joke!!
"Dear Mr Chandler,
Thank you for contacting Toyota Customer Experience Centre.
We have followed up your enquiry and unfortunately Deck Hooks have been developed by TME (Toyota Motor Europe) and are available as a genuine Toyota accessory in Europe only.
There may be after market alternatives in Australia however we do not have any information on these.
Our apologies for the inconvenience.
Thank you for contacting Toyota and giving us the opportunity to respond.

And my reply!!
"Hi Marcel
Thank you for your response, however in my opinion this is totally unsatisfactory. Here we have a $70,000 plus vehicle designed to go offroad, with no way of securing items in the rear cargo area.
Surely if these deck hooks can be obtained in Europe, they can be made available here. Did Toyota Europe design the slots in the rear seats, and write the text in the owners manual explaining how to utilise the slots?? I think not!!
I suggest you pass this on to management with a view to rectifying a serious shortcoming by Toyota Australia.
Looking forward to a satisfactory outcome.
Regards
Geoff Chandler"Geoff

Re: Luggage hooks for VX and Kakadu
Hi Geoff,
A mudguard washer is the same as a normal washer except that the outer diameter (O.D.) is larger. They are usually available in metric or imperial sizes, but I usually get the imperial size because my local Coventry Fasteners have more of them. The OD sizes goes up in 0.25" increments.
You can get these as a set of 2 for RRP$20 from Rhino dealers
http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCateg ... 14_40.aspx
You can view the fitting instructions on the left hand pane of the website above.
I bought my channel nuts from a Rhino dealer at a discount price bucause I needed quite a lot and the lifting eyebolt and SS mudguard washers were from Coventry. I chose not to buy the set from a Rhino dealer as I could get the components of the set cheaper elsewhere. The little savings added up once I bought a dozen.
A good roof rack place will have all the items loose in their store, so bring your car in and you can try it out yourself. Just be careful that the thread of the eyebolt does not bottom out on your channel. This will damage the surface. If the channel is aluminium, that's not a worry, but if it is steel, it's going to rust.

Re: Luggage hooks for VX and Kakadu
Latest dialogue with Toyota Australia
Dear Mr Chandler,
We are very sorry for the frustration this has caused, the vehicle is designed in Japan and the manual is a worldwide publication.
I have expressed your concerns to my supervisor however we unfortunately do not have the accessory and are unable to assist in your request.
Our sincere apologies,
Kind regards,

Hi again Marcel
I know the deck hooks aren't on your genuine Toyota Australia accessory range but they should be, and there doesn't appear to be a good reason why they can't be. If your supervisor doesn't feel like taking this matter further, then I wlll.
Don't forget this is a safety issue. All cargo should be able to be safely secured, but in the VX and Kakadu models there is no provision for safely tying down rear cargo, except if you live in Europe! Does Europe have a higher priority for security and safety?
I'm going to persist with this because I think it is an important oversight by Toyota Australia.
Regards
Geoff ChandlerGeoff

Re: Luggage hooks for VX and Kakadu
Hi Geoff,
I took my eyebolt, channel nut and mudguard set to Toyota to try it out and it's a no go. The channel nut cannot rotate 90degrees once inserted into the channel. Also the bolt heads in the channel can be a bit of an interference. Especially the one closest to the door. the ones on the back seat pose less of an interference issue. So the search still goes on for aftermarket deck hooks.
