Hi All,
So I took the Kakadu out for its first off-road venture, nothing major, just an easy stroll through Mt Mee (Dayboro to Woodford). The purpose of the trip of course was to test out its 4x4 features, overall i'm quite impressed. I had a few questions, hopefully someone knowledgeable out there can help.
- I do not have the DAC switch in the Kakadu, am I correct in assuming that Crawl Control replaces the need for DAC as it essentially serves the same purpose?
- This is my first Automatic 4x4, in typical easy trails (such as in Mt Mee) where you have long winding downhill tracks - how do you guys typically manage speed without using the brakes too much? Today using S mode and picking between gears (4-hi) I couldn't really find a gear to maintain a reasonable speed...without having to slow right down and keep it in first, and don't want to resort to 4-lo when the terrain doesn't really call for it. Is this just something I need to get used to, perhaps try a different driving technique? I really tried to limit the brake usage today, but a lot of the time had no choice unless I was on steep hills and in 4-lo..and the brake pads started to smell at one stage so I pulled over for a while and cooled them down.
- I tried a few 'moderately' steep inclines/declines today to try and test out crawl control. Scared the life outta me, and i'm not sure if I'm switching it on correctly or if it is normal. Going by the offroad manual that came with the kakadu, it does mention to expect sounds coming from the wheels, etc. However this was loud crunching and could feel it in the pedals. Has anyone tried this yet (crawl control)? I did exactly as described in the manual "Was in 4-lo, S-1st (manual says to pick any gear), switched it on and selected slow speed". The instant I select it and it's activitated, off she goes but along with it all the noises and the crunching feeling in the pedals. So I instantly turn it off.... hoping someone can shed some light on this one!
That aside, I think I'm going to have a blast with this vehicle. Looking forward to the ARB bars coming out, suspension lift, and a decent set of All Terrains!
