  • Starting Problem with Prado 150

Is anybody else experiencing trouble with the push button start?

On an intermittant basis, my vehicle will only half crank or not at all.

Starting the vehicle, I depress the brake and clutch pedal (Manual), await the green indication light and push the start button.
More often than not, 3 out of 5 times, I am greeted with a dredded red indication light and a vehicle that did not start.

My Toyota dealer cannot fix the fault.

Does anybody have this same problem with the Prado 150 or any other Toyota Push Button Start?

Are you holding the button down too long? I use to depress the button until it started but now I give it a quick 'stab' and it starts by its self (i.e. I have let go before the starter motor has even made a noise) I'm still yet to really work out how the auxillary on/off, just radio on/off works with out having it beep at me and what cobmination of how many times to push the button and where to put my feet! Is it thinking you want one of these other function?

Re: Starting Problem with Prado 150

I have read the manual quite extensivly to see if there was anything im doing wrong, tried quick press and long press, seems to have no effect.

Pressing the button without feet on pedals, will cycle through accessories / ignition.

I have driven many other Toyota`s with push to start buttons, but never had trouble like this. Not sure if its a "Prado" thing or a general "Toyota" problem.

Re: Starting Problem with Prado 150

The start button by itself, 1st press ( green light) switches on accessories ie radio etc. 2nd press (orange light) turns on the ignition, lights up all of the dash warning light etc. 3rd press turns turns it all off , as if you have removed the key.
But you can start the vehicle from any point just press the clutch in and give button a push. Don't hold it in waiting for it to start. It fires up itself. I haven't had any problems with starting and have done 4000 kms so far in 2 months.

Ironman, could it be something to do with the clutch pedal not being detected in the down position ? Faulty sensor or pedal not pressed down far enough. Cause then you would just cycle through the start button functions , no light , green light then orange as you have described.

Re: Starting Problem with Prado 150

It would seem this is now solved.

ForestAnt was right on the money suggesting the sensor on the clutch pedal.

It appears that the "stopper" for the clutch pedal is the sound deadening fluff on the firewall in conjunction with a small plastic pad behind the clutch pedal.

I made a small adjustment by thinning out some of the excess fluff, to allow a bit more compresssion on the clutch pedal, now the sensor presses down a bit further. I think that previously the sensor was only half pressed, it was touch and go whether it was enough or not., hence the intermittant starting.

            Been OK since.

            Thanks for your help.

Re: Starting Problem with Prado 150

Johny - short answer is, yes that's normal. It's the brake booster working, and in fact applying the footbrake and starting a car is a common method of checking its function.

I have a February 2013 Prado 150, D4D Auto. Intermittently it wont start. Select Park, Handbrake on, doors closed, foot on brake. Press the start button and it should start. Intermittently I press the start button and all the lights on the dash come on but it wont crank the motor over.

It has done this every couple of weeks and sometimes continuously. Does not seem to make any difference if both sets of keys are in the car or if you swap the keys around. Fault stays with the Prado.

The fix is to lock the car using the remote, then unlock and try the start. I found it starts every time, first go.

I took a video of the fault and gave this to the dealer. They want the car for a day next week. Will see what they find.

When I had a similar problem, it was the steering lock not disengaging, you know turn the car off and then pull the steering wheel till it locks, because of the tension on the locking pin it would not release.

I had a similar issue. It was a faulty drive shaft sensor. The computer was displaying an error from this sensor. Once it was replaced the issue resolved.

Mine has been towed three times because it wont crank over to start. Mr T is having difficulty finding the fault.

Put the car in either P or N, foot on brake and the start button light comes on. Push the start button and nothing. All the instrument lights turn on, you can move the gear leaver through the gears but it did NOT crank over.

First trip on the tow truck to the dealer, they replaced the brake sensor switch. I told them this was not the cause because the start light was coming on.

A few weeks later, another trip on the tow truck, so they replaced the gear position sensor switch. Again I told them this was not the fault because the start light was coming on.

A few weeks later and you guessed it, another trip on the tow truck, and they replaced the starter motor/solenoid assembly. I am not convinced because I could not hear the solenoid click (or is it a clunk). Anyway that was this week. Will see what happens over the next week or two.

They looked at the fault codes but none registered.

Any clues???? I am thinking it might be the computer.....

                            Bumping the thread.....

I have a slightly different problem.

                            1. Unlock vehicle with key or just by opening door.
                            2. Press start button once to go to accessory.
                            3. Press start button again to go to ignition.
                            3. Depress foot brake and the whole instrument cluster switches off. The amber light never turns green but the whole things turns off!
                            4. The immobiliser light is solid red. Not sure what the state of the light was when the vehicle was unlocked.
                            5. Get out of the vehicle and lock it again with key.
                            6. Unlock vehicle and the repeat above process only the second time it will end with light on start button turning green and vehicle starting.

Not sure when it happens and what am I doing wrong in the instances that it happens. Has happened about 3 times in the last month.

                            Cheers.
D4D. How long will it last?

Why are you unlocking it with the key?

Sounds like you have not de-activated the electronic control.

Either use the fob to activate/deactivate the control, or grab the door handle near the front to lock/unlock.
