Just purchased a new GXL petrol automatic.

Always had a manual petrol, still have the 80 series Cruiser which I want to sell. Still goes well, however, the wife prefers the auto because of her dodgy knee, and I will buy a van at a later time so the auto will make for easier towing.

Spent time and money adding a few things to the Cruiser, so will have to start again.

Maybe someone can answer a few questions. The Prado was advertised in the brochure as having an alarm, but the salesman told me it did not. Windsor Toyota advised me they can fit an alarm and incorporate it with the entry button. Repeller brand at either around $700-, or $900- for the top of the range. Are there any better/worse brands and of course cheaper prices.

A supply and fit of a Toyota tow bar, including wiring and and Anderson plug for a van was quoted at $1,235-. The van will be an off road model, so is the tow ball a bit low for the van?

Does anyone know what the maximum recommended down pressure is for the tow ball? Cannot find it in the manual (635 pages is too much to read and absorb) and an enquiry with the spare parts man at Windsor could not tell me.

I asked about the 220volt plug in the rear, and he told me it would run a laptop, and may be even a toaster. I don't think it will run anything like a toaster, he was a young bloke, and I don't think he knew too much really.

With regards to adding a second battery setup, any recommended brands. As usual, Toyota has fixed something to the second battery slot, this time the steering fluid bottle. Has anyone moved it, and is it easy to do? With the cruiser I had to move 3 items along the side to free up the tray.

How does the Accessory position work, such as the radio playing with the engine stopped?

Toyota also stated a UHF radio might interfere with the electronics. Any one had a problem?

In one of the posts, I cannot remember who, there was a problem with an Autofridge interfering with the radio. Has that problem been rectified?

Apologies for all the questions, would appreciate any answers.

    Yowie.

    Re: new prado

Some things I can hopefully answer, I have an Auto GXL diesel -

Alarm - It definitely has an alarm on pages 112/113 of the manual it explains about the Alarm and Engine immobiliser, you might want to check with the dealer again and maybe ask for a different salesperson

Accessory position - With no foot on the brake, press start/stop once to turn on radio, press again and you get accessories on, press again and turns everything off. If you put your foot on the brake it will start the engine after one press.

Towbar - Price seems a bit steep,I was quoted $1000 from Toyota but I am getting a Hayman Reece supplied and fitted including all electrics for $700.00 and if you go aftermarket you will avoid any luxury car tax if you are within the range. Don't know about the towball being low specifically but from pics I have seen the Toyota bar does seem lower than HR or others if you are in the Brisbane area there are some posts for Wynnum towbars as well.

UHF - I hope it won't interfere with the electronics seems a bad design if it does, I am going to be installing mine soon so will find out what happens. I will wire direct to the battery as I did read that splicing into existing cables can mess with the electronics which I guess makes sense. I will also need to avoid the knee airbag when fitting my UHF head, I have a remote handset model where I can put the head anywhere that can be heard, normally behind the panel under the steering column but will need to have a good look around to see where there is room.

          Re: new prado

Sent an enquiry to Toyota website, and received a reply the GXL is fitted with an immobiliser and a theft deterrent system, which is their term for an alarm. I asked for an explanation how the alarm works, but no explanation received.

            Hi

That manual is a classic novel, the dealer I bought my Prado from offered a half day with a service person to go over any issues or questions I have. I am compiling a file and will take them up on the offer.

            Regards, Richo.

Look forward to your reply richoson. If something is not standard across the range, the manual states 'if equipped.' If Toyota is going to produce such a detailed manual, why not nominate the models with the extra accessories?

Probably because the Prado is sold internationally and Toyota writes one manual for all markets. And different markets have different model names and accessories. So the easy way out for Toyota manual writers is just to state "if equipped".
