  • GX Vs GXL

So hopefully this won't ignite debate, but I am coming down to the wire with my decision, and would appreciate your opinions.

Aesthetics aside, so far as I can see the benefits of the GXL are :

    Side Steps
    Sliding 2nd Row Seats
3rd Row Seats (which I would be removing anyway)
4.2" Multifunction Display with rear camera
    Climate Control
    Alarm

Of those, I can live without climate control, 3rd row seats, sliding 2nd row and I can option on the rear view camera and associated cd player, as well as an alarm. The GXL side steps bend easily, so I am happy to wait and put aftermarket ones on later on.

Am I missing something here? Is the difference in price not really justified?

    Thanks for your input...

    Re: GX Vs GXL

by going on price down here in newcastle its a 7k difference, 7 grand worth of accessories on a gx would probably get you a decent set of lt rated tyres (ring around and trade the grandtreks in when ya drive off the lot) liftkit, bullbar and lights any maybe a winch, with all that you r gunna get further then a std gxl, ok so the gx as you say isnt as speced up but you still get all the safetygear like traction control, abs and esc, food for thought, i know what i would do. cheers samo

The re-sale on the GXL is far better than the GX. If you ever whant to sell it you would get more $$$$$$ back on the GXL.
      cheers

I can't live without dual climate control so it's a GXL for me.

watching prices on carpoint etc would not support that statement' as the D4D 120 GX prados are fetching top dollars.Yes GXLs are getting more money but only about as much as the initual purchase price difference ' so i don't think it should influence one's descision.Maybe they may be a liittle harder to sell to the mums and dads , but when optioned up with a few good extras well then they only appeal to folk like us on Pradopoint anyway.

you can't buy a good LT tyre for the 6.5 inch rim that comes on the GX.

so, you're up for a new set of rims ~$1500 as well as the tyre change over.

the good thing about the GX is you don't have the side airbags, so you can get any aftermarket step without worry - can't do this with the GXL. I spoke with ARB who said they didn't have plans to make them at the moment, same as they don't have plans to make them for the 200 series. so if you get a GXL and aftermarket steps - they won't be ADR approved.

i personally put the value in the climate control, the rear parking sensors and camera. i understand you can put the sensors and camera in afterwards, but it all sits nicely this way instead of having to run another screen off the windscreen. and if you start talking about putting an inbuilt screen well the cost goes up again.

So there are side steps being made for the GX though? By companies like ARB, TJM etc? Listed on the GX specs is "Front and 2nd row curtain shield SRS airbags". So it does come with the curtain airbags in the rows for which it has seats. Does this mean that the aftermarket sidesteps could indeed cause airbag malfunction? Anyone got confirmed knowledge on this?

Also I was thinking of factory upgrading the head unit in the GX to the 4.3" 6 CD in dash unit, which comes with the camera, so I don' have extra windscreen mounted screen etc...

                  Re: GX Vs GXL

I have the GX (Poverty Pack) and it does indeed have side curtain air bags. The message from ARB is that the steps are underdevelopment and I have seen side steps and rails in their latest catalouge stating they are the evaluation stage at the moment.
I am waiting to see what happens as the kids have trouble climbing uo into the back seat.
If you are going to remove the 3rd row seats then why would you get a GXL.

                    Re: GX Vs GXL

I've got a GXL, and to be Honest, I should have gone the GX.
Yes, I like the Dual Climate Control and reversing camera, but the seats and side steps are useless as far as I am concerned.
I've removed my sidesteps, and have heaps more side clearance (5 inches to bottom brackets of steps), and she actually looks like a 4wd now !
If there was an easy way to remove rear seats, they would be going too.
Spend the difference as Samo says on accessories that suit your purpose. Decent Rubber, Bar, Tint, Racks and you'll be a happy man.

                    That's my to bobs

sorry my mistake regarding the side airbags - it looks like we are all in the same boat. arb head office have told me they aren't developing the steps. they have rails, but these go under the guard, in front of the step and connect to the chassis in the same way as the 200 series.

Crisp - i've had another look over the newsletter but i can't see where it says they are developing steps for the 150 series.

a couple of engineering companies are making the sliders for the, and a few more than i've called said they won't do it because they have to get them tested properly and don't want to spend the money or go through the trouble with litigation concerns if they don't and then find the steps or sliders interfere with the deployment of the side airbags. in saying that, i know a few people who don't really care and are putting them on anyway.. personal preference really

i think at this stage i'd rather just wait for to see what the likes of ARB and TJM do - but i think it will be a long wait either way.

                        Hi Guys
No-one has mentioned the Roof Rails on the GXL yet. As people on this thread are saying, you can eventually buy just about any aftermarket accessories but I am not sure that I want to put too much load on a set of bars mounted directly onto the roof. Like the extra seats, if you don't need them then it is a lot of extra money to pay.

Roofrails are a pain as you have to remove to fit a decent roof rack. Getting mine off in a couple of weeks and rhino rack fitted.

I went with the GX, the money I saved on initial purchase price will go into mods. The wheels are an issue nothing out there in AT tyres for 6.5inch rims. I have however changed rims over for $500, got a nice set of speedy rims and sold the originals on eBay.
