  • Repairable Writeoff

    Hi everyone
Would greatly appreciate peoples thoughts on a bit of a situation
Basically i am upgrading from my 120 GXL to a 150 Kakadu and have negotiated a price with a car yard here in Perth.Thought id do a history check online and it turns out it was a repairable write off
Heres the details why it was a repairable writeoff engine and interior fresh water
Kakadu is 2009 model diesel with 124 000km write off 2012 price ive agreed to pay car yard is $36 000
It was first registered in Queensland so assume it may have taken a swim in a river
I have taken it for a drive and everythings fine i do all my own mechanicl work on my vehicles and engine is fine no cold start injector rattle or when warmed up and as everyone knows this model is full of electrics and they all work fine
As it has been 6 years since its swim would you assume everything is sweet and would you buy it and would you go back to the car yard and tell them and try to get it for less or is it a good price?
By the way they never told me it was a repairable write off and after some searching apparently they dont have to
    Appreciate any feed back
    cheers

I'd be getting a lower price for sure mate, that number is pretty good for one that has had normal wear and tear, but something that's been drowned should have a lot more off.

i thought car yards were not allowed to sell repairable writeoffs
i know they can't take them as trade ins
and i doubt a bank will lend you the money on it

unless you know 100% exactly what was affected by water i'd walk away mate look for another one. cars written off in one state are often sent interstate for repairs and it always causes issues down the track.
my own experience - Bought a motorbike new in 2005 in NSW , was written off as a cosmetic / repairable write off 9 months later. I went to auction , bought it , repaired it and reregistered it. Rode it till 2013 , then we moved to QLD. thats where the fun started!! they said it was a repaired write off so would not transfer the NSW rego unless i could provide reciepts for its repair and photos of the repair process ,yes even dating back to 2006. I had not kept all this of course so i had to have the bike sent to the QLD TMR head office to be forensically examined to make sure it had not been rebuilt with stolen parts. strewth it was a cosmetic write off , a few plastic panels needed repair , thats all. It was a lot of grief at the time let me tell you.
just spend a bit more and get a clean one. and go to a different dealer that shonky one.

Lots of valid reasons why it was written off, remember all the cars flooded by rain deluge in underground car parks?
Back a bit in Qld so long as fresh water didn't get higher than the dash it was repairable, over that or salt water and it was statutory. But now cars have airbags in doors and other spots, perhaps that rule has been changed.
Once cleared from the RWO registry it's considered as good as any other 2nd hand car and their process is quite exhausting as the biker's experience proves.
I've seen recent you tube videos of Cruisers driving through the fresh creeks at Fraser, water up to the window sills. Bet you see them traded in a few years no worries.
Get it for the best price you can, you have some bargaining chips.

Did they replace the Airbags? Do they have proof of all the work that would have been required? If not, and with it ALL itemised, then simply no way. That's aside from what a ridiculous price they're asking for it.

Itemised receipt for everything or not a chance. Don't forget - you're going to need to sell it one day too.

i dunno id still avoid it. even with fresh water there are plenty of connectors and ECUs down at console level which may be water affected. you may be lucky for a while but sooner or later it will bite you.
this is where a proper history check will be a good idea

Could’ve been sitting in Nolan’s Brook Cape York for example..... Drowned in bonnet depth water for 2 hrs until a tow truck arrived to drag it out..... Would be declared a write off because the quotes for a mechanical inspection and ejecting some water from the cylinders, detailing of the interior, as well as an auto electrician to completely re-wire it with a new wiring loom would cost $30,000 which is more than the insurance repair cost threshold of a 3rd of the total cost of the vehicle. So the insurance company pays the car owner out so they can buy another car. The drowned Prado then gets sold at auction by the insurance company as a repairable write off to recoup some money. It gets bought cheap by someone in the right industry, re-wired at cost and sold on.

get a proper report on the write off details, it might have been something minor (depending on the state that it happened in)
is SA now any car that has had water ingress is STAT write off , they dont allow them to be repaired anymore ( they used to get you to take them to the dealer and have them disconnect every connection and spray some stuff in them, they started at $1200 upto $5000 to get done)

but i still believe they cant accept a write off as a trade in ( non would take mine) so where did they get it from ????

My vehicle was written off last year due to a mechanical fire, and I purchased the vehicle back to salvage parts. Cost was $1500 and there was legit nothing wrong with it. I was going to fix it and give it to my brother in law, and the shonky mates told me to fix it and send it to NSW...

                        I would give it a wide berth, as I paid roughly $38 000 for a 2014 GX with 75000.

I know that once written off, no insurance company wants to deal with it, and if they do you will have a whole heap on clauses on your contract.

Sorry for weighing in so late, hope it works out.
