I wrote to my Toyota dealer recently with concerns about this DPF issue. It should be noted that I have a 2018 Prado, it has not had its first service and I have had no issues (yet). Here is the reply
    I’m not sure what’s wrong with his car has we have never seen it but the current situation is;

Some Euro 5 compliant vehicles can set the DPF light or blow excessive white smoke at times. This is only under certain conditions and there is a field fix coming out very soon. I believe it’s only a software update as the DPF is only dirty which is the cause of the white smoke.

While we are waiting for the field fix there is a temporary fix (which should last over 6 months) to clean the DPF with a special solvent and force a reclean.
All DPF’s will clean themselves when working normally as the car is driving and once the fix has been applied this issue will be sorted out.

This current concern will have no effects on the engine, clutch or DPF and the owner should have no concerns of reliability or resale.
    Thoughts?

Quoting from Winchy's dealer: "there is a temporary fix (which should last over 6 months) to clean the DPF with a special solvent and force a reclean".

This lasted 2 days for me before I had the "DPF full See owner's manual" warning again. (This message shows on the 2018 GXL rather than the DPF light which presumably shows on older models or maybe the GX.)

And this is why I bought a 2014 GXL rather than a later model with DPF. Better to get the end of a long running model than be a guinnepig for the next. Now all I have to worry about are the bloody injectors failing!

Nothing wrong with the DPF if u use properly. 70+ k in a Hilux no issues just picked up a Prado.

            hahaha, yeh, right..

What does "if used properly" mean. You should be able to just get in and drive, any way you like.. any less than this and its already failed.

After 63,000 k of “proper use” mine failed Hutch. Must have just been the unlucky one.

I thought the same, our prado is looked after and sees a great mixture of driving speed / distances but after 45k it all started white smoke increased fuel economy,

once it started it seems to be spiral effect it was serviced / cleaned 1k ago and it’s going back as it’s already blowing mushroom clouds again they told us it will just be coming back for a clean as often as needed till they have a solution, fairly annoying all at our inconvenience no hire cars available ect.

                oh what a feeling!

Our 4th Toyota and I think they are starting to loose that rep. they are not the Toyota they used to be

I agree with the three posts above, from reading reports of issues on here as my DPF hasn't been any trouble yet it seems that problems are caused by the temperature not getting high enough to burn the soot. Usually in vehicles with engines other than our 2.8 the answer is to drive harder but this doesn't seem to work as people have had failures towing heavy vans into strong headwinds etc. Could it be that under high load the engine is belching out particulates which block the filter faster than they can be burnt? Cuda has said that he can increase the burn temperature by changing down, therefore more revs with a light load but we shouldn't have to alter our driving the DPF should be designed to cope with all conditions.
This issue has existed long enough now for a company like Toyota to have identified what is causing the problem and designed a fix that works. By taking so long to even admit there is a problem they don't seem to realise that once their reputation has gone down it will be a lot harder to get back.

From all reports the ones who did longer trips or towed seemed to have issues earlier

They are now admitting there is a known issue and they are working on it..........

That does not help the people that forked out 90k to be told you will just have to keep coming back to your dealer regular basis to have it cleaned, why should we wear the constant inconvenience in time and transport for this ? Not to mention having no confidence taking it touring like our intented purpose due to knowing it is likely to fail.

                    Too little too late.
Just not the Toyota they once were

Just seen all the about the DPF. I had my 2.8 back in after i saw smoke coming out the back. Got a long story from the dealer about updating the software etc, and so far so good. It’s just had it’s 60,000 kay service. How does this issue show itself? What are the symptoms?

A quick side note.... I spoke to a crusty old diesel mechanic yesterday who said that Toyota (and the like ) are only compelled to achieve particular emissions up to 80k km’s after that the don’t give a fat rats hairy arse!

Food for thought particularly if the numbers on your speedo are approaching $80k

Totally different maybe, BUT, the Kenworth trucks i drive have a manual button for dpf. They do a burn automatically, but occasionally it would lose a bit of power, and you had to do a manual burn. Generally 30 mins.
increases the idle as mentioned while stationary. We do them when we have our half hr break
