i bit the bullet and then 6 weeks later needed 2 injectors replaced after the original warranty was up.

the cost of the warranty was less than half the repair bill. worth it.

after my old mazda CX5 blew an engine @ 55,000km and 2yrs, 11months (just still within warranty), with a replacement/repari cost of $15k, I was always going to get the extended warranty on my prado. Piece of mind is well worth it in my opinion.

Is it normal for Toyota to send out extended warranty offers in the 3rd year?
I am looking at getting a Prado in the next few months and was wondering if I should pay for an extended warranty upfront. If they offer it down the track I mightn't worry about it.

No - you need to contact them. You're just need to call the dealer and they'll flog it to you. So long as it's within warranty, you can buy it. I subscribe to paying later, only because despite all good intentions, there may be a reason to sell it within the warranty period - who know's? And despite what they say - it'll be the same price, always has been. That is, unless you lease it - then buy it outright.

I picked up my 2018 GXL yesterday. I went with the dealer warranty. $1345 gives me 6 years and 160000 kms total. It also includes fixed price servicing for an extra 3 services with a guarantee of $200 saving each. And as I use it for work I can depreciate the total amount at 25%/year for 5 years so I reckon I will theoretically come out in front. It is transferable if I sell the car during this period as well.
