  • Engine revs in 4th sport

I am a new member so not sure if this is in the right section.I tow my van in 4th sport mode as the manual says. At 90kph its sitting on 2500rpm.If I tow in auto 5th and it drops back to 4th gear it is only doing around 2100 rpm and still doing 90. Can anyone explain why. I asked my dealer and they didn,t think there was a problem. 2013 d4d

When you're 'locked' in 4th the torque convertor is locked up with no slip. When you're in Drive it looks like you havent actually kicked back to 4th, I'd say you're still in 5th with the convertor unlocked (generating lots of heat). Leave it in 4th, the extra revs wont hurt it contrary to what you may think you wont be using extra fuel.

Thanks 120D4D, went back to the dealer and asked someone else, they basically said what you are saying.I,m quiet happy to tow in 4th,was just curious about the revs.

Good to see at least some dealer staff know what they're talking about!
