  • Roof load limit

    Hi Guys,

I just bought a full length steel roof rack, which is 50kg in total, in paper. BUT, when I get it, I feel 50kg is really something. I mean heavy. ╮(╯▽╰)╭

If I install this rack on my prado, plus a 40kg tyre with rim, plus 4 maxtraks, plus other things, on it, all together nearly 100kg. Is my prado strong enough to carry these things on the roof? I really get no idea whether my question is too stupid, or I am just thinking too much.

Thanks for your time and wish you guys have a good one!

    Cheers,
    Joe

Is it strong enough? Almost certainly, yes. Are you exceeding the load rating specified by Toyota? Absolutely.

Return the steel rack and replace it by an aluminium rack.

If you exclude the standard specs of the roof on the Prado and there is an accident then you will be under risk from insurance. Not worth it.

Yes, I will call them tomorrow. They won't allow the return of opened package. I may need to sell it on gumtree. But thanks for your reply!

What they have sold you is "not fit for purpose". It weighs 50kg + and the car has a weight limit on the roof of 80 ?? kg so you can't even carry a spare up there. If no joy with a refund [ and they should] then mention of Fair Trading and the Trade Practices Commission may be timely. Goods sold by businesses have to do the job they were designed to do. Even if you have to pay the postage to get it back to them or their agent it may be worthwhile.

Not fit for purpose? Yes it is. They're not selling the product saying it's specifically for throwing the spare tyre up there. Not fit for purpose would be if the unit itself weighed more than the load limit.

I have to agree, they sold a functioning roofrack, It's not their fault that it's heavy. That being said hopefully they come to the party and let you return it and pay the differece for an alloy one. Best of luck.

So a rooftop tent with two people exceed the load limit?

As i understand it “not fit for purpose” can be used also where youve specified that you need a roof rack suitable to carry spare tyre maxtracks etc (ie a specific weight) on your 20xx prado to the sales person and if theyve suggested the steel one then youve have grounds for a refund... however if youve just sellected the steel one then gumtree may be the way to go.

Gets a bit breezy so you need to close the window flaps.
