Prado 150 1kd recommended engine oil and service intervals

Hi all,

We have recently purchased a Prado 150 with the 1kd motor with 160,000kms. The service schedule is recommends 15km intervals. We always serviced our old 95 series Prado every 10kms. It mainly does highway driving. what are your thoughts on the 15km service intervals?

Toyota recommends 5w-30 oil. Due to the age and kms I've gone for a slightly thinker oil 10w-40. It seems to be running a bit rougher.
Has anyone used thinker oil in the 1kd. If so what are your thoughts.

I look forward to hearing other Prado owners experiences.

mmmm, what year is your Prado Migara?
I'd have thought the service intervals were actually 10,000 km (unless driving in 'adverse conditions" ...off road, towing, stop start, dirt roads etc, in which case its actually 5,000 km)
and i'd have though the oil was supposed to be 15W40??

I think we need a bit more information about your car, year, etc...and are you in Australia?...i'm not sure you have the right information, I had a 150 Prado (2010 model) auto with the 1kd FTV 3l engine and it was definitely 10,000 km intervals and it was recommended to have 15 W40 oil????
Either way,personally I'd not leave it 15,000 km between oil changes...anyway, what country are you in?

I think the newer 2.8 donks take a really lightweight oil- I was talking to my mechanic recently and he said that some of the newer cars use 5 weight or even 0 weight oil to reduce friction and therefore fuel consumption- I'm guessing that this is part of the reason that so many manufacturers are having issues with their engines burning excessive amounts of oil. I know that Holden did a recall and changed all their oil caps from 5w-30 to 5w-40, as well as putting a sticker in the owners manual over the old specs correcting it to the new spec.

Thanks for the response. Its a 2013 Prado VX. Toyota NZ confirmed 15,0000km service intervals.
They also confirmed the recommended oil is 5W -30. We are in Wellington New Zealand. I wonder if Australia uses thicker oil because of the temperature?
Interesting about the newer Holden's.

Here is a link to the service booklet. 10,000 km service intervals here in Australia at least. If the service intervals are still at 6 month intervals, then the km traveled between services may be irrelevant if you dont do a lot of km. Either way, id not want to go beyond 6 months or 10,000 km myself, especially if doing any city stop start driving, towing, or off-roading, and even then Toyota then recommend 5,000 km Oil and filter changes.

Yeah 0W-30. But I don't think it's linked to excess oil burning off, as I've used 15W-40 since the 10,000km mark and it'll always need a top up (between 1.4 to 2.2L - once) each time at around the 8000km mark. Having said that, I am at 9000km now and it's not used much - perhaps it's a running in thing... (after 59,000km)

I haven't carried a bottle of oil in the car with me since Dad's old 1978 Crown....
