  • Tips & recommendations for a newbie

    Hi all

Apologies for the long post in advance. Recently purchased a 150 Series 2009 Prado GXL TD. At an impulse went to Moreton Island. Never been 4x4 before & sure never did any beach driving either? Luckily no issues (beginner’s luck I suppose). Admittedly, I did get new Outback Armour shocks & springs fitted prior. On return decided to change all fluids in vehicle, (oil Castrol 5W-30, coolant Nulon, power steering Castrol) as well as air con & engine filters. My newbie questions are:

    1. Will be purchasing new AT tyres, any suggestions. I’ve seen loads of 4x4 with BFG & Coopers. Are they any good? My vehicle still has stock Dunlop Grandtrek AT20s on them. Have read on a few websites that the Yokohama Geolanders are good, though admittedly haven’t seen many on the road. Most driving is highway with hopefully the occasional trip to Moreton/ Straddie.

    2. What fluids do you guys recommend, specifically oil. From reading previous posts here, it seems that many do an oil change every 5K & filter change every 10K with a flush. Are the 3rd party filters from Supercheap/ Repco ideal?

    3. On my previous car, I did the brake pads myself & could never get them to stop squeaking. Any recommendations on brakes & rotor upgrades. Watching YouTube videos they don’t seem that hard so will probably give them a go myself. Any tips on getting the brakes to stop squeaking?

    4. A good mechanic, South Brisbane

Any other tips, recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

    1) I have BFG KO2's- I like them as do many others, some people don't. I personally have had a good run with mine so far, and they do perform well offroad and don't make any more noise onroad than my old AT's- But possibly will make more noise than the set you've got on now (as will any other AT tyre, it's the tradeoff for a more aggressive tread pattern)

    2) Check your owners manual, I use Penrite 15/40 as my car has got a few kms on it now. I change oil every 10K kilometers as almost all my use of the car involves extended highway driving and 5K would be having me change it every few weeks.

    3) No, although mine often squeak as well but this is due to dust getting in them as I drive on dirt roads almost every day. Not sure how much you can change with the brake system as it's heavily computerized with ABS and traction control etc. (don't know a lot about this though, so hopefully others that do can comment).

    4) Can't help with that as I don't live anywhere near there.

EDIT: Only reccomendation I can think of is to carry your own recovery gear when you go offroad- It's considered bad manners to use other peoples straps etc. and a lot of the time people won't help you if you don't have your own gear as they don't want to wreck theirs. Recovery bags with everything you need can be had for little money but at a minimum you want a snatch strap, winch extension strap, D shackles, a dampener blanket (although can use a towel in a pinch) and a hitch receiver to allow you to be recovered from the rear (NEVER recover off a towball, there's just been another poor bastard killed earlier this year when one flew off and came though the window while attempting a recovery)
