  • I drive throttle controller

    Hi Guys
My son has just installed an I drive throttle controller in his Nissan Navara, it seems to have sorted some problems he’s been having in lower gears.
My question is has anyone here put one on a 150 prado and if you have what results have you had? I’m having trouble justifying spending $285 on something I’m doubtful will be of any benefit.
    Regards
    Ashley

I had a mate of mine who works at ARB fit one to mine and let me loose for a few days on an extended "try before you buy". I'm not much of a fan of them- They don't do anything that jamming your foot futhur down on the pedal won't do. If you want to test out how they work just plant your foot to the floor everytime you want to take off at an intersection. For the price they're asking it's obscene- I could actually see more of a use for them offroad, but unless i saw one for well under 100 bucks I don't think I'd bother to be honest.

4WDSupercentre used to sell a Kings Throttle Controller for about $70. Looked to do exactly the same as more expensive units and was also plug and play.
I cant find it in the online store anymore. There are a few videos on it when you google search though.

Thanks for the comments guys, I think I’ll give it a miss as I can’t really see any benefit.

Due to my 2012 GXL 150 D4d 60,000 K having the annoying problem of when putting your foot down and no response what so ever for 2 to 4 seconds, i was wondering if anyone with this problem has fitted one of the many Throttle Control Modules available, and found any improvement to this annoying problem.

All they do is simulate you pushing your foot futhur down on the noise pedal. If you want to see what it's like without spending hundreds on one, just jam your foot to the floor every time you take off- That's literally all it is doing.

My understanding is due to random controllers applying full throttle unexpectedly they were removed from the market. Mechanic i know had 2 do it on Toyota's causing dangerous situations. there's a bit of info around the web about them.

Firstly, I have never used one, but I do want to try one. There are usually several different (exponential) throttle curves to choose from when using these units. Some settings can give you more resolution around the start of the throttle curve which can help dramatically when say rock crawling or other technical 4WDriving. There is no way that your foot can replicate a certain throttle curve consistently especially when 4WDriving. I think that these units could be of benefit to some drivers.

I don't disagree entirely, but some of the marketing out there saying that it "reduces turbo lag" and "improves performance" is straight out misleading. I think there's a place for it in rough stuff, but the price that a lot of these companies ask it outrageous- How can you justify spending hundreds of dollers on something that just mimics you pushing your foot down harder?

I had a Torqit throttle module on my previous 76 series when I purchased it, and for me it certainly was noticeable when in use. Awesome for slow, rocky hill climbing when you dumb down the throttle response so it wouldn't be jerky when you least wanted it to be. It also did make it more responsive when you dialled it up, but I didn't find that as useful

They’re beneficial for off-roading. When dialled up to U-9 on the Idrive it makes the Diesel engine throttle behave more like a petrol (more responsive when you press the accelerator).
2005 120 series V6 Grande, 2 inch susp lift (King/EFS combo), 32 inch MT’s, Safari Snorkel, rear diff lock, breathers, Light Force spotlights, UHF, dual batteries.

                        They're also good when towing.

I have posted an as-yet-unanswered question in the accessories section about how much benefit they are in a Kakadu with drive modes like Sport and Sport+. I suspect that the iDrive gives more control over the throttle boost, and perhaps the maximum boost on the iDrive is more than Sport(+), and the iDrive would enable that boost without tweaking the suspension and whatever else the drive modes do. Does anyone know whether there's any benefit over and above the drive modes?
