  • 2016 release Prado vs 2018 release Prado

    Hi Guys,

I have been able to trade a 2016 and purchase an new 2018 prado. There are definitely some differences other than the printed brochure differences. I have observed the following and bear in mind I have only done 800km since new.

    1. Gearbox is behaving far more relaxed. Gear changes are fewer and smoother. 6th gear holds much easier when climbing hills. I have not modified the transmission in anyway and when normal driving ATF is running just over 100 deg and doing a fair bit of hill climbing temp raises to 120 deg whch is of concern. I will contact my dealer to see if this should be considered normal based on them having modified airflow to account for larger tow capacity.

    2. Seats in VX are more plush than older model. This may be due to the pin hole leather and seats that now cool and heat.

    3. Sound system is more responsive in most music. Playing USB music no longer crashes and seems faster to respond to commands. Mapping system is slightly different according to my children but I couldn't really tell.

    4. Engine seems lose already and feels like its been driven for 20,000km already so cant wait to see how it is performing in 20,000km

    5. Fuel use I will report on when I do first fill up as I have found on board system estimate to be inaccurate. This is sitting on 10.3l/100km at this moment

    6. DPF seems to operate like old one however I did note that temps were reaching high 500's when doing 110km/h. First burn occured at 300km and second at 350km.

    7. There is no DPF manual burn button. I asked the dealer and they said it had not been released yet.

    Thanks

Seems ok. Body roll not so bad. Definitely stiffer with older model but I'm yet to add the 2 inch lift so will have a better idea after that. Overall its much nicer to drive and looking forward to adding lift, snorkel and TJM bar. Still contemplating adding the unichip. I drove for 3.5hrs and felt like I was chilling on a soft couch. Radar cruise is a nice feature when driving bush.

I wonder if I can ask to have it added at first service/ checkup?

This is great as I’m tossing up between a 2016 with 23,000kms on it or a brand new one for $8000 more. It’s a hard decision, especially considering the wife holds the money.

I have given them another chance as I think as all new products they have issues that can be and will be rectified. I'm certain they are fixing the problem and the new ECU program has hopefully finally resolved the DPF. The 6 spd auto has a different program and behaves better and is smoother in the 2018 model but could still do with more tweaks. I will be going the unichip route but not sure when so this will make the transmission even better and engine response no longer an issue. Pity Toyota wont put a bigger engine in the Prado it would make it unbeatable.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up for the new update. One person has had it done and it didn’t work.

The new ECU update has been applied to a few vehicles and not fully released until a week or 2 ago. I think you are getting confused with the previous update which was supposed to increase temps while hwy driving. The latest update uses the DPF differential sensors and is supposed to be a shorter more intense burn. Wont know if its actually worked for about 30,000km.

Nope, a bloke on a different forum got the latest update and has already reported back saying that it did not work. He has had a heap of DPF issues.
