  • Prado Kakadu 2019 - Head unit upgrade - Brisbane

Anyone has any recommondations on upgrading head unit in Brisbane, I am mostly after andiod auto and a front screen, where i dont have to count pixels by hand...welcome to 2019 toyota tech .
I am not after ebay headunit, mostly after profession solution, which keeps all factory functinality like Cameras, Steering wheel controls, but upgrading the hopelessy outdated screen and ancient interface.

I sympathise with you about 2019 Toyota tech but when I was battling with them about the restrictive and almost useless head unit and out of date maps it was three years ago and "only" for a GXL
However as this is one of my favourite subjects I would like to make a few comments and will be interested to read what your solution is.
Things may well have changed a lot now but when I was searching for a head unit I visited several dealers in WA looking for a head unit but was disappointed with their lack of knowledge. There were some good units available, Alpine etc but all of those I considered to be too restrictive in that they did not run android and you were still limited to their maps, you couldn't add what you liked.
I ended up with a Chinese 10 inch head unit which has good sound, the camera (only one) works a treat and being android powered will run any android program. Although it will mirror a phone screen there is no need as everything can be done directly from the head unit.
Have you searched Chinese websites like Ali-Express to see if anything is available for your vehicle?

Thanks Mate, i would hate to run ali-express special. albeit the one on my old Forester seems to do the job wekk enough. when you spend 80K on Kakadu, i would hate to stick head unit from ebay. Finding Shop seems to be hardest part.. i can certainly agree with this...

Yes I suppose you are right about 80K then fitting a Chinese clone, however this makes what Toyota forces owners to put up with all the more appalling.
Amazingly the Chinese do make (well at least copy) some good stuff and of course it all comes down to what you want your head unit to do. I love mine as it has digital radio, tyre pressure monitor etc but the main advantage from my point of view is the ability to run any android program.
For instance I regularly keep an eye on things with torque pro and use a program called Vu+ player which provided you have a phone signal with data can screen anything live from a (Vu+) satellite box. You cant do that with an Alpine, Kenwood or Pioneer.
Anyway best of luck and please post what your final choice is and what you think of it.

Sadly, not getting anywhere.. few of the places, i have talked to are too scared to touch the kakadu and are not sure, if they can get multi view cameras to work, etc with any 3rd party system.

I have a 2018 VX and I wanted to do the same thing as you - the current system has a separate digital amplifier so changing the head unit would require re-wiring the entire speaker system. Then there is the full view cameras...at the moment I don't believe there are 3rd party units that will work with the Toyota system - I read somewhere that the camera voltage is different to the norm. Good luck with your search...let me know if you find a solution

The camera voltage difference between Toyota and after market systems is common, one is 12 the other 5 volts, I have forgotten which way around it is. There are converters to overcome this and can be used when fitting Alpine or similar units. My Chinese unit worked straight out of the box but as it is an earlier GXL only has the reversing camera.
I know that Toyota went to a lot of trouble with their Fujitsu head units as fitted to my 2015 model to make the operating system hidden and locking the map to the unique SD card number so that customers were stuck with their awful maps etc. I assume that the later models like yours which have been updated are even harder to do anything with.
This seems such a shame, Toyota admit that this issue causes the most customer complaints yet they persist in forcing customers to put up with no Apple car play or Android auto presumably in an effort to keep ripping people off for out of date map upgrades.
I think customers are partly to blame for putting up with it.

Had a look at EC Vision & Sound. They have a unit however it's not clear if it supports the Panoramic and Multi-Terrain Monitor or the Premium JBL®11 14-speaker surround sound system found in the VX and Kakadu. I have followed them up with an email so I will let you know how I get on.

I got this back from EC vision and sound

As of right now we do have a unit for the 2018 Prado, but it will not support the 360 cameras on the Kakadu,
In about 2-3 weeks we have a interface unit coming out to allow Apple Car Play/Android Auto on the factory screen, we will be the first people in the world with this product, it should be awesome.. stay tuned on out FB page
                        good news!

Yeah, good news. They never got back to me.
I found another system on eBay that supports the 360 camera and the JBL amp sort of
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Android-...frcectupt=true I am yet to pull the trigger on that so might just hold off and see what EC vision come up with.

OK great news I have a fully functioning chinese unit that supports all preexisting cameras on the VX and Kakadu. Its really a no brainer in that the cameras are not being fed directly to the infotainment system but another Canbus computer in the system. The information is then sent to the head unit. Due to this the bad news is that the camera resolution/quality does not change with a different head unit but does work as per OEM unit.
The chinese unit comes with a new fascia and Android 8.0. It is very responsive and easy to install. Android auto works perfectly.
2018 150 Series Crystal Pearl Prado VX 2.8l. 2 inch King springs and Bilstein shocks, Airtek TJM snorkel.

that is great news - do you have any pictures and link to the unit? was it a simple plug and play install? do all steering controls work too?
