  • Fuel light flashing

Hi guys. Long time reader, first time poster.

thanks for the advice over the years. This time I have a unique problem.

I have a 2014 gxl and recently had the 150k service. The next day the fuel light starts flashing just under half a tank and when I tried to fill it up again, it was painfully slow. This process has been repeated several
    times as well.

I took it back to Toyota a couple of times and now they’ve had the vehicle for 3 days. I got a message from them asking me to pay over $1000 in labour for them
to resolve the issue. I haven’t had a chance to discuss what they’ve done.

I understand in the 150k service they replace the fuel transfer pump. Could this be the source of the issue? I’m frustrated that a problem started immediately after the service. Any ideas on what has happened? Would you pay them? Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks

    Oh what a feeling....
that’s why I do my own services or take it to a trusted independent mechanic when it’s to complicated

So the outcome was a failure of fuel to transfer from one tank to the other.

the dealer indicates that it was due to algae accumulation in the fuel tank, lines and filter. It’s an odd coincidence that this occurred the day after the 150k service which featured fuel transfer pump replacement.

        A very big "coincidence".

I guess they didn't show you any proof?

Algae does not grow & accumulate in a couple of days, if it was due to algae why was it not reported at the service especially since they replaced the transfer pump.
It is also quite visible on fuel filters when changing them. Have they listed how they have rectified the algae? Did they clean the tanks, lines and polish the fuel? As well as replace fuel filters. If not and there is algae present they have not done a proper job.

We used to see algae regularly in boats not being used much however over the last decade I have not heard of it being as much a problem as it used to be, perhaps the UL diesel is not as susceptible to it as old school diesel.

From memory you need some moisture for it to grow, hence why boats with half full big fuel tanks condensation was an issue as it would lead to algae growth. Some people did not want to leave 3,000 or 4,000 litres of fuel sitting there unused. So if there is moisture in the fuel perhaps your water in fuel sensor should have activated.

Grinbot, I had a chat to the service manager over the phone. He wasn’t available to show me proof when I was in there.

Leethal, they mentioned they cleaned the lines, replaced the filter bench tested the pump but didn’t have an itemised receipt for me. That was meant to come today via email but didn’t happen. No mention of algae on previous service but took the opportunity to slag off the servo down the road for apparent dodgy fuel

unfortunately I just paid them to get my car back after 4 days sitting at the dealer. I’m a physio so not mechanical minded but sceptical af still.

Jimmy, the algae growth will be in the fuel tank or tanks so if they have not treated and cleaned the tanks you will continue to have an issue if there is algae present.
Adding a fuel treatment to kill the algae will kill it but the algae is still present, think grass clippings after mowing and will partially at least block your filters.
In the marine industry we supply dual switchable filters so when they have contaminated fuel they can run on one filter while changing the other filter. Obviously that is not needed here however the principle is the same, you still need to clean (scrub or polish) the fuel & tanks somehow.

i would keep pushing them for more information and confirmation of the issue, perhaps contact RACQ/NRMA etc if your a auto club member to get some technical support.

FYI I've worked for a marine engine manufacturer for over 15 years so conversant with fuel supply/storage/quality issues affecting engines.
