A safer alternative for me has been to use an Ocean & Earth waterproof key pouch which slings around my neck and sits inside my wettie. It has never leaked but as extra insurance I put the key in a mini ziplock first! They cost around $6. see here http://store.oceanearth.com/epages/s...ducts/OEAMWA31
My wife bought me a similar waterproof bag, but a different brand, from a Katmandu store. Also use a mini ziplock bag as extra security, so far the bag has not yet leaked anyway.

Saw one of these on a car today when I was walking along the beach front this morning.

            G'day guys,

I've just read the thread as I have recently bought a 2011 150 GX and thought there might be a better way to hide the key than how I'm doing (but it doesn't seem like it).

I hide mine down near the front of the engine near the bullbar. For some reason it either doesn't have the range or simply doesn't activate when it's hidden there. The car remains locked, I don't have to carry the key with me in the water and I don't have to pull the key apart in order to take/hide various bits.

Try it out and see what you think.

If you hide it somewhere under the back it will only allow you to unlock the tail gate using the buttons, which are not obvious unless you own a prado. Its what I do when surfing

I am a bit confused by all this. If you remove the metal key and leave the rest in the car you can then use the metal key to lock the car using the lock on the driver's door. Rotate forward and the car locks. Then the sensors on the doors do nothing. I carry the metal key around my neck when we go kayaking. Never had a problem. If you don't want to carry that then I guess you need to do something else but if you hide the whole thing on the car anyone can walk up and unlock the doors. Then some detective work may then see the car driven away.

And so if someone smashes a window, they can start the car. I've found if the fob is anywhere inside the cabin, the car will start.

Hmmmm, I will see what happens. Still it is better to hide it inside and have the car locked than leave it outside so the car can be easily unlocked.

I just checked this and you are spot on, key or no key, the fob still works. But I'd still rather hide the fob inside the car locked away rather than outside the vehicle.

Just did the test and yes no good. Still I agree with Josh unless the bad guys see you hide the key who the hell would suspect it? I will continue to do it this way.

As I commented last year, buy a small waterproof bag with a cord and Velcro closure (such as from Kathmandu or a surf shop). Insert the fob and key/s into a ziplock bag, then that bag into the waterproof bag.

I body surf in board shorts, so I slip the cord over me and down to my waist, place the waterproof bag into the board shorts pocket with a Velcro closure, then tie the cord around my waist. Has never come loose, even in heavy surf.

Also use the same waterproof bag when paddling the kayak, so far so good.

Your Prado is worth too much to have some prick watch you hide the keys, then drive off while you are swimming or paddling away.
