  • Display current speed limit

When I had my 2019 Prado VX serviced 6 months ago I got a Hilux (Rugged) loan vehicle for the day. I guess it was probably the 2020 model, and today I was given a RAV4 to use for the day (probably a 2020 or 21). Both these vehicles show the current speed limit of the road you are on in the instrument panel / cluster (right next to the RPM / speedo), but I have not found a setting for this in my own car. Both the Hilux and the RAV4 are cheaper vehicles than the Prado, and unless this was a feature introduced from 2020 (bit late to the party Toyota?) I expect it to be available on my car as well.

    Is that right?

Yeh I saw that the 2020 Hilux had that feature. I’m pretty sure it is a new 2020 feature. My 2018 Prado does not have it.

The vehicle must have GPS with up-to-date maps for this to work reliably. I've heard that the Toyota supplied maps are expensive to have loaded* and the updates are sporadic and often years old.

      * Unless Toyota have changed their ways. The last I heard is that user downloads are not possible.

I'm very happy with the aftermarket GPS, with unlimited 'free' (ie paid for at purchase) downloads, that I have in my 2016/7 GX.

Yes as maps are my favourite moan I am curious to hear from anyone with this feature in a new vehicle. I wonder what map software Toyota are using now? if it is still iGo I use the latest maps from them in my android head unit and while they will give bells and whistles and announcements like "you are over the speed limit" I can vouch for the fact that they are not that accurate. I would only use it as a rough guide to the speed limit, I would think that you could easily be caught out if you relied on this information to prevent getting booked.

After posting above, I found that some of the latest models have speed sign recognition software (provided they have the forward-facing cameras). That's fine if there isn't a van between the camera and the speed sign. Then, again, that could be between the driver's eye and the speed sign. I don't know how this system handles the default rules of 50km/h in built-up areas unless otherwise signed. If it works, great. The url is https://www.toyota.com.au/toyota-safety-sense/road-sign-assist but the Toyota Australia website appears to be down at the moment!

Perhaps we'll see this system in the 2021 or 2022 Prado update.

Looks like it is included in the new version that is about to come out. https://www.caradvice.com.au/876454/...ice-and-specs/
There is mention of it about halfway in the article - “Revised road sign recognition means the Prado's cruise control can be reset to match altering speed limits.”

I can confirm it’s working in the new Prado. It reads the signs, which also means that when you enter a road and there is no sign, it doesn’t display anything, so it’s not coming from the gps as far as I can tell.
it also turns red when you go over the limit, and a spoken warning if you go far over.

Just wondering what would it take to incorporate it in the 2019 Prado VX. Also, can the new head unit be installed in the 2019 prado?

I think that would be quite involved and not worth it; you’d need to install the camera (located next to the mirror), replace the entertainment unit (as that’s where the brains sit) and replace your dashboard display to get the information displayed. And you would also need to replace the cruise control, as it integrates with that. My guess is that you’d look at at least $1000 if not more, for what is essentially just a nice gadget.
After using it for about 3 weeks now it is nice but not earth shattering. It picks up most signs, so including the 40 signs in a school zone, and also the signs displaying the exit speed on a highway, e.g. you suddenly get a warning that you’re speeding as the exit you just passed has a limit of 60kmph.

absolutely no chance of retrofiting it to a previous model , it is much more relevant and important for you to concentrate on being a competant and attentive driver than letting a flaky computer do it for you

                      Hi PRADO Gurus

In early 2024, I hired a BMW X3 for a 3-day round trip from Victoria to South Australia. During the drive, I discovered a feature that I found incredibly useful. While using cruise control, the BMW automatically recognized the speed limit when passing a sign and prompted me with a message asking if I wanted to set the new speed limit. With just a click of a button, the new limit was set, and the car would either slow down or accelerate accordingly.

This feature was especially helpful when driving through small country towns where speed limits would change frequently—dropping from 100 km/h to 80 or 60 km/h, and then back up to 80 and 100. Everything could be adjusted with the press of a button on the steering wheel.

I'm now considering purchasing a 2023 Toyota Prado (likely the 150 - VX model), and I’m curious if anyone knows if this feature is available or has used in the late 150 Prado?

                      Much appreciated.

A late reply. I recently bought a used June-2023 GXL. Being a Prado 150 is has cruise control. Being a GXL, it has GPS. And being post 2020 it has a lot a fruit like Blind Spot Monitoring, Adaptive (Radar limited) Cruise Control and it does read and display speed signs - even lop-sided roadwork speed signs. The display goes red when you go over the signed speed limit but it references the speed taken from wheel rotation: unfortunately, the speedo remains 5% to 10% optimistic. And, no, you are not prompted to alter the cruise contol if it is set faster than the limit signs. Perhaps the 250 models will have a new level of technology.

                          Geewhizz,

The feature Buchi was talking about is enabled on yours by setting DRCC(RSA) to ON in the vehicle setting on the centre display.
This allows you to adjust the Cruise to the new sign posted limit recognised by the camera (up or down) with a long press of the stalk instead of walking it up or down in the normal 5 or 1 km/h increments.
The downside is you inherit the three beep warnings when cruise over speeds the set point by 3 km/h (generally on cresting hills or downhills) which can't be turned off or fully muted using any method other than turning DRCC(RSA) back to OFF.

I don't think that the post-2020 Prado 150 operates like the BMW, in that you don't get a prompt to accept a newer limit when the camera sees sign for a different one. At least mine doesn't.

If DRCC(RSA) is ON an up or down arrow will appear beside the Speed Limit Sign symbol on the dash when it updates and you can long press in the direction of that arrow to change cruise set speed to match sign symbol speed.
I have all my exceeding speed limit beeping stuff (other than the cruise 3km/h overspeed associated with this setting which can't be overridden) turned off so don't get any other visual/audible warnings than the speed limit has changed until I look down at the speed limit symbol on the dash.

Edit: As well as the up or down arrow you get a green box around the speed limit symbol when the registered speed limit and your current cruise set speed don't match.
