5th Wheel Questions...

Couple of questions for people running larger 5th wheels on the back of their non-flatback Prado 150.

1) Is there a limit? Is there a weight or size that should be considered "too big"? If so, are there reinforcements needed beyond a certain size?
2) Are modifications needed for the rear camera? Are relocation kits necessary / available?
3) Are longer studs or other modifications recommended?

That's all I can think of for now. But interested in any other thoughts / recommendations on the topic. Thanks!

I have only slightly bigger tyres (BFGoodrich T/A KO2, 265/70R17), but it was enough for the spare tyre to *just* rub on the door. So I installed a Kaymar Wheel on door bracket (part K7120, see http://www.kaymar.com.au/Kaymar2018/...cc_bracket.php), which also allows me to easily fit a wheel bin bag. It was $139. Maybe overkill, but it is nice and solid.

Weight limit? I'm not sure what it is. I'm probably pushing it with the heavier tyres, extra leverage from the Kaymar bracket, and the weight of the rubbish we add to the wheel bin...

I don't think there is any need to move the rear camera, although, it would be nice for when we have a wheel bin bag attached. There are some threads on here talking about that. It's something I've been meaning to do.

I run 265/70R17 and I just put 3 flat washes from Bunnings on each of the studs. Did this on my previous 120 and never had an issue. No relocation of camera necessary as it’s mounted to the bracket. I also sold my wheel cover on Gumtree.

As an aside, I have fitted a relay (switch) box that allows 2 alternate (aftermarket) cameras to be connected through to my 2016 GX's main screen. One of the extra inputs connects to a reversing mounted on my camper trailer.

I like that idea! I was a little hesitant about moving the camera as it would create a compromise for when using the car around town, which is actually the most important use for the camera. Thanks!

I documented how to wire a 12v aftermarket camera here. (Although I didn't detail the switch box I made/used.)
